Meet Monicya LaCour

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monicya LaCour a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Monicya, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my mother, Alisha. She’s always kept going, maintaining her independence no matter the circumstances, she never gives up!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Originally from Colorado Springs (also known as NOLA$iMONE). I’ve been writing music since I was 13 years old starting as poems, gradually writing songs in which I was extremely shy so, I would only write and share with my mom and siblings.

I met Ho0dHippie in 2018 and I just couldn’t hold back musically.
He inspired me, we’d ride around and listen to beats and I’d just listen to him rap. I made a 30 second video rapping over Cardi B’s -Bodak yellow instrumental and sent it to him in a text and from there I just continued writing and dropping music. In the past year, I released two of my most popular singles: Tiptoe & Suit – NOLA$iMONE, following two music videos. I am currently working on a new single I’ll be dropping in a month or so.
As an artist I am inspired by sceneries, and emotion, but very versatile, I can write to anything, about anything.

As a growing independent female artist I love seeing the evolution of females in the industry.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three areas of knowledge that are most impactful in my musical journey would be to be free, understand it’s not personal unless you make it personal, and do as many features and collaborations as possible.

Advice I have for those early in their musical journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve the areas of knowledge is to do something everyday to perfect their musical skills and abilities, wether it’s vocally, lyrically, or expanding their knowledge of music.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my mom did for me, was be my mom. No matter what she’s never given up on me, right wrong or indifferent she’s still right here!

The most impactful thing my step-dad did for me, was not being my father by blood, but a dad by choice and for that i’ll love him forever.
