Meet Victoria Komu

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victoria Komu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victoria below.

Victoria, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Building my self-esteem and confidence as a female photographer has been a journey of self-discovery and resilience. Growing up, I wasn’t the most confident person, but my passion for photography always stirred up a desire to stand out. I envisioned myself as an outstanding photographer who could go out shooting in high heels and freeze moments as well as visually tell important stories. I knew i always wanted to break boundaries and statistics.
Embarking on my solo photography career in 2020 immersed me in a predominantly male industry, presenting a handful of challenges. Overcoming these challenges, often as the only woman on set, has been instrumental in developing my confidence.

My deep passion for photography grew as I developed my skills and explored different techniques, boosting my confidence. Every challenge i overcame boosted my belief in my skills. I also always seek feedback from my clients after delivering the work assigned. The feedback and criticism helped me grow and build my confidence and strengthened my artistic voice.

Finally, building a strong portfolio has been very crucial. Seeing my work evolve over time gave me a tangible sense of progress. And most importantly, believing in my unique perspective has allowed me to develop a strong artistic voice. It’s a process of constant growth, but with each shot, my self-esteem and confidence as a photographer deepen. It is still an ongoing process and i am continually proud of the woman and photographer i have become, empowered by my unique perspective.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a photographer and a filmmaker but i love to all myself a visual storyteller, i feel like it sums up all i do. The most exciting and special thing about what i do is being able to freeze memories, tell stories using images and create an impact in my community, country and globally. I pursue different types of photography but what really excites me in is documentary photography. It makes me feel like i am able to do so much by just capturing moments that end up creating an impact, inform and educate people from all over the world and just seeing people appreciate my talent.
My art is one that aims to tell authentic life stories in the most honest and purest of form.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Communication is a vital skill generally and really applies a lot to me as a photographer. It’s essential for understanding a client’s vision, discussing expectations, and providing feedback. Effective communication helps build rapport and ensures my clients are satisfied with the delivered results. It also helps with networking with fellow creatives.

2. Creativity and authenticity is the cornerstone of my photography. I’m able to see the world uniquely and to capture moments in a visually compelling way.

3. Patience. It takes a lot of time before everything you have worked hard for starts paying off. Remaining patient and persistent is essential for achieving long-term success in the industry.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

I am privileged to have my biggest support system as my family. They have always held my hand and cheered me on. They have been my number one cheerleading squad. Other than my family, my friends have also helped me overcome challenges because even when i experience self doubt and imposter syndrome. My fellow creative friends have also played a big role in helping me grow in my skills by giving me opportunities to practice my photography and through collaborations. Finally, I want to thank me, for believing in me haha.
No man is an island and so we should always learn how to live well with others, learn as much as we can from others and grow each other.
