We were lucky to catch up with Teresa Cabello recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi TERESA, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Many times it is difficult to cope with situations that are beyond our control. I am a visual artist, a sculptor, so it is very easy for me to take refuge in art and express my feelings through it. Any artistic expression allows us to communicate in an intelligent and calm way. One of the reasons art has the ability to heal is because it turns mistakes or adversities into opportunities. It is the most honest way to express oneself. That’s why it’s so important to teach art to children at an early age because it makes them more confident adults. A confident and honest person is capable overcome any challenge.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was born in Venezuela on March 27, 1959, I studied Architecture and Arts. I am from a generation that has seen great changes in the history of humanity, therefore, I still have a lot to contribute. Today everything is instantaneous, even knowledge has ceased to be important because it is there, available to anyone who needs it at any time. It seems that it is no longer necessary to learn or think. Incentives are needed that expand the minds of young people, that force them to question and debate ideas, that force them to locate themselves in the reality they live, and Art in all its forms is the best way to achieve this.
I have been an art instructor in academies and cultural centers. My future projects, in addition to exhibiting my work in different spaces inside and outside the United States and continuing to sow art in the minds of children, is to continue looking for spaces and opportunities for new artists to exhibit their work.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance, honesty and freedom of thought. Only with these three qualities can any goal be achieved.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Being an immigrant at 65 years old has been the most difficult challenge to overcome. However, I have tried to be consistent in my goals. Sometimes cultural differences hold back my expectations but I try to be positive and always keep going
