Meet Tammy Schreiter

We were lucky to catch up with Tammy Schreiter recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tammy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

The process of finding my purpose wasn’t immediate. It was a journey rooted in my love for art and the deep desire to create a space that would bring people together through creativity. Art was my sanctuary growing up, and after college, I realized I was looking for a purpose, not just a job. I dreamed of a welcoming environment that supported local artists and made art accessible to everyone, leading to the creation of Hatch Art House. Opening Hatch was a leap of faith, but it was when I realized I had found my purpose. Every day, I get to work with talented artists, connect with the community, and see the impact that art can have on people’s lives. Looking back, I see that my purpose was always there, waiting to be discovered. It just took time, reflection, and the courage to follow my passion.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am the owner of Hatch Art House, an art gallery located in Madison, Wisconsin. I curate exhibitions, select artists to showcase, organize events, and handle the day-to-day operations of the gallery. My work involves promoting the artists featured at Hatch Art House, engaging with customers, and ensuring that the gallery remains a vibrant and welcoming space.

I curate a space that highlights eco-friendly, locally-made art and brings together a community of artists and art lovers. What makes Hatch Art House special is the personal connection we create. Each piece is chosen with care, and I love sharing the stories behind the art. It’s more than just a gallery; it’s a place where creativity thrives and people feel inspired.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My journey with Hatch Art House has been shaped by three key things: my deep passion for art, my curatorial skills, and my understanding of this business. My love for art inspired me to create a space where both new and established artists could thrive and where the community could connect with their work. Curating the right pieces, ones that resonate with both artists and visitors has been crucial in defining Hatch’s identity. But running a gallery isn’t just about art—it also takes business savvy. Balancing marketing, sales, and events has been essential in making Hatch Art House the sustainable, vibrant space it is today.”

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m feeling overwhelmed, the first thing I do is take a break. A walk or yoga helps clear my head and reduce stress. I also prioritize and delegate tasks where I can, making lists to break everything into manageable steps. Seeing it all written down makes it feel more achievable. And when I need a boost, I reach out to friends for moral support—they always help me regain perspective.
