We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Connor Mccollam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Connor below.
Hi Connor, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my passion for my art. In the music industry one of the main determinants in your success in media comes from not only the quality of work but your speed in which you can deliver. Artists and labels are typically on strict schedules and timelines so a media producer that can deliver quality quick is an asset. When you are truly passionate about what you do there tends to be a second gear or second wind that pushes you to want to create, even after a long show or shoot. In conclusion my work ethic comes from my passion and obsession to create.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a media producer focused in the automotive and music industry. I am currently going on over a decade of creating visuals for various brands and artists. Currently I produce media for a handful of artists such as Madison Beer, Offset, Jessie Reyez and others. On the automotive side I went from producing media for small tuning events to currently working with several large brands such as Mercedes Benz Canada and Automobiles Etcetera.
I feel what is exciting about what I do is being able to use my artistic vision to showcase the work of others, whether thats someone else’s art or creation. As an example, for Offset, as he was preparing for the launch of his album “Set It Off” I worked hand in hand with his creative team on a two month stetch creating unique and viral media to build aniticipation for the release date.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities and skills that were most impactful in my journey was persistence, self belief and readiness. In media, as it is an art form, it is easy to get discouraged. Some people just getting into it do not realize that getting your foot in the door with artists and brands takes a considerable amount of emails, contacts and rejection before having anything come to fruition. Your work is consistently being judged and you need to be mindful that not every contract is meant for you. Leading to the second idea of self belief, to truly excel in media you need to be strong willed on knowing that you have the ability to accomplish your goals. Lastly readiness has always pushed me further than my talent / ability alone ever could. It can be as simple as ensuring you you have all the necessary tools to making sure you know all aspects of the tasks at hand. Always make sure to do your research on all facets of a project before pursuing it, it not only makes you sharper in the midst of it but gives you a calmer approach and helps your creativity flourish.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The beauty of media and the the fast paced online world we live in today is that inspiration is everywhere. Not any one person has helped me overcome challenges but the collective of people you encounter in this line of work is a big driver. In media you encounter numerous other creative individuals, all with their own vision and way of working. I try to go into all situations as a sponge, I love to retain as much as I can from the people around me, the good and the bad. The environment with social media and technology is forever expanding and it is important to be receptive to the copious amount of information thats out there. The more open you are the more you learn, and media is a field that I find myself learning something new every day.
