Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steven Staine Fernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Steven Staine, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My Dad. Everytime I hear Hard Work I think about my Dad. Wake up early, work till late, multiple jobs and always making the best out of his free time.
Seeing that growing up made me want to work hard, become independent and self reliant. Having a strong father figure, that is hard working, relentless and everyday gives it his all is extremely valuable to a young boy growing up and it can’t only be thought by words, the actions need come with it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a kid I was driven by imagination. Where people saw a truck, I saw a space ship, where people saw a pen, pencil and eraser, I saw a warrior with his sidekick and their big hover board to go wherever the action called for, where people saw a simple picture, I saw it come to life with a story and visual that went along with it.
Even though this wasn’t exclusive of me, many kids as they grow up loose this side of them but I managed to hold on to mine through and through because it was one of the many things that gave me life. Seeing the world with much more than what meets the eye.
Combined that with my father introducing me to the greats Michael Jackson, The Beatles, The Police and so much more really created an insatiable passion and love for music.
Now I’ll admit it wasn’t easy keeping this creative and unstoppable imagination along with my passion for music alive.
You see, as time goes by and we grow up things happen, responsibilities come into play, dreams feel like they’re pulling away and as they say “Life Happens” and then you’re there sitting in your cubicle at work, physically there and mentally somewhere else, wondering is this the life that you truly wanted.
Many numb themselves off and continue to live the rest of their lives like that, always looking the other way anytime a glimpse of what could have been shines their way but me I held on to that question and denied to let go of it. When you do that, you can no longer look at the world around you the same way, all you can do is wonder what a world where you fully pursue your dreams would be like but specially what it would be like if you didn’t and that alone will burn a fire under you bigger than any wildfire you’ve ever seen.
So fast forward to current days, I use those reminders to keep creating, acting on my ideas and letting that kid in me, that so desperately wants to be seen and heard, tell me all of his wildest imaginations so I can bring them to life.
As to what I’m working on next, on the acting side, I have a couple of feature films that will be filming this fall and winter as well as other creative ventures that soon the world will see.
As far as the artist side, I go by the name of Nico Reservoir and I venture in the genre of Alternative Hip Hop/R&B but I don’t limit myself to those genres. I’m always seeing where my musical ideas will take me. I’m constantly creating music so be on look out for many more singles and artistic projects to come.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In the words of Socrates “I know that I know nothing”. That way of thinking has kept me humble and constantly seeking knowledge that has and will continue to help me get better and come much closer to my dreams.
Being relentless in my pursuits and knowing that if it doesn’t work one way it’ll work another way, so I keep pushing and powering through all of the life obstacles that come my way.
Having an ultimate and unbreakable sense of belief in myself. In this world you’re constantly face with rejections and a lot of times things don’t go as you planned, but only those who firmly believe in themselves, who quickly learn from there mistakes, keep their chin up high and stand tall will endure and ultimately succeed.
My advice to anyone in your journey is the following,
Be a student of life and never stop learning. Be opened to constructive criticism. You’d be surprised of where a life changing advice can come from.
Don’t be hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned. Look at yourself like a child that made a mistake. Be gentle with your words to yourself when you do something wrong, simply see what you could’ve done better objectively and simply focus on the actions you’ll take to be better next time. Remind yourself it was just a bump in the road and nothing more.
Be proactive. Be clear about your next step, plan it out, have a step by step to follow, a daily check list and constantly be revising your life plan seeing where it needs improvements but most importantly execute the plan. You’re in charge of your life so act like it.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
“He who chases too many things ends up with none”
This has been one of my biggest struggles. Overly complicating my pursuits by spreading myself to thin and chasing too many things. With time you realize that you haven’t specialized on none of them and this leads to not reaching the goals and accolades you would’ve want to.
I’m currently narrowing the focus on what truly matters and what’s going to move the needle in the direction that I want.
It is a struggle when your battling habits that have been with you from the very beginning but when you see they don’t serve to your higher purpose, it’s time time readjust and come up with a better plan that will ultimately get you to where you’d like to be.
