Meet Q Randle

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Q Randle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Q below.

Q, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

I think many things in my upbringing could be mentioned but the major part that sticks out currently, is growing up in different, active communities. Between friends, church, sports and a large family, all things that played a role in how I view generosity. Every human has some level of generosity but we all arrive to that destination at different points in life and with various intentions. Sports and church involvement gave me experience in team building. On the other hand, the size of both my parents families and our social gatherings, gave me experience in recognizing interests of various demographics. Those things combined birthed my love for entertainment. Being in entertainment is it’s own unique brand of generosity via acts of service.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Hey I’m DJ Q from Kansas City, Missouri, my event production business, Five Enterprise, and as a DJ reaches 20 years this fall season. Along with that I dabble in graphic design work for my brands and a few others. What’s most exciting is being able to grow my brand and business as the KC metro area grows rapidly. On the first stop of current excitement, is reaching my 1 year anniversary of The Wake Up Mix, mornings on Power105.1 (KCJK-FM). Also, I work closely with the UpDown Nightlife App and Kin Seltzer (a nightlife app & the 1st Black owned hard seltzer), we do a lot of cool events, while marketing our products around the city. Both Kin and the UpDown App have some exciting news to come around the 4th quarter of 2024, to close out the year. So there’s a lot to be excited about looking at the next 18-24 months.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

One quality I learned early in life was being an effective teammate through a large family, sports and church activties. As an entrepreneur you have to acquire community building skills just as much as personal development skills. The 2nd quality would have to be leadership. Whether vocal or leading by example, you can’t be afraid to lead and uplift. Being an effective leader within a community not only presents opportunities for personal growth but also for those in your proximity. The 3rd I would say is creative freedom. Artists and creatives, in general, thrive when they’re able to create freely, within an ecosystem vs being boxed in or fitting a mold.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

An obstacle that I could point out is my fear of delegation. As business owners and creatives we tend to learn how to do several things at once but as the company grows, we need to be able to delegate tasks and free up mental space. One step to overcome a “multihyphenate responsibility mode” is hiring contractors for larger productions. Event prep takes time + staff for the end product to be an enjoyable experience, and I’ve taken the time over the past 10-12 months building a reliable team of contractors that could become part time staff within the company.
