We recently connected with Lauren Korda and have shared our conversation below.
Lauren, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
For many years, I was fortunate to have a successful corporate career and in that chapter a very fulfilling life. I had achieved many of the goals I set for myself, surrounded by accomplishments both personally and professionally, that brought me both pride and a sense of fulfillment. I was the jet-setting, corporate ladder climber with everything I could want at my fingers tips. I was driven by the dollar. Life was good, and I felt content with the path I was on because that was the life I had dreamt of or so I thought. But when I lost my mother, everything changed in a way I never anticipated.
Her passing was an unexpected jolt, a profound loss that shook the foundation of everything I had built. As my husband once said “he watched the light leave my eyes.” The grief was overwhelming, and it brought with it a deep sense of emptiness that no professional achievement and sadly almost none of my personal aspects could fill. In the midst of that pain, I realized that while my career and life had been remarkable, there was so much missing from this life I had worked so hard for —a deeper sense of purpose and true happiness that went beyond personal success, that went beyond money or statuses. My mother’s death forced me to reflect on what truly mattered, and in doing so, I began to see life through a different lens.
It was in this period of reflection and mourning that I discovered my true purpose. Her passing forced me to confront the fragility of life and the importance of living with intention. My mother had always been a guiding light, her life filled with compassion, generosity, and love. Her legacy was not in what she accomplished professionally, but in the way she touched the lives of those around her. I realized that my purpose was not just to achieve, but to contribute to the world in a way that honors the values she embodied. And so I ripped every bandaid off and I brought myself back to my foundation and started to rebuild.
This loss led me to a path of giving back, of using my skills and experiences to make a positive impact on others. My purpose became clear: to live a life that not only honors her memory, but also brings light and kindness into the world, just as she did. In the shadow of loss, I found the strength and clarity to pursue what I am truly meant to do, turning my grief into a guiding force for my future. I found true happiness. I found a new direction for my life—one that brings meaning beyond what I had previously known, all in the memory of the incredible woman she was.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At Gardenia & Graze, we’re passionate about creating beautiful and delicious charcuterie grazing spreads and platters that transform any gathering into a heartwarming event. Our creations are more than just food; they’re a celebration of life’s flavors, the beauty around us, and the special moments we share. Each board and table is thoughtfully crafted with the best, locally-sourced meats, cheeses, foods, and florals, all with the aim of making your special occasions truly magical.
Whether you’re hosting an intimate get-together or a grand celebration, I am here to add a sprinkle of magic or “WOW” as I like to say, making every event an unforgettable experience.
When I am not creating charcuterie spreads or hosting workshops, I am creating custom floral arrangements for all different types of occasions locally. Whatever I can do to bring a smile to someone’s face, is what I love to create, No event is too big or small for WOW. That is my motto when it comes to this business.
This venture is deeply personal to me. My mothers passing, was a pivotal moment in my life, one filled with fear and uncertainty as I grappled with the question: who was I without my career?
Rebuilding yourself is not for the faint of heart. My mother once asked me, “If you could do anything, what would it be?” My answer was simple: I would open a small café serving small bites & incredible wine, and be surrounded by flowers and puppies. Two years after her passing, I launched Gardenia & Graze, a passion project that has since transformed my heart, mind, and soul.
When I’m not creating grazing experiences, I’m honored to be part of an amazing team at Shriners Hospital for Children—a cause that fulfills another passion of mine: serving others. I discovered my true callings in life, and I’m grateful for the journey that has led me here. I’m happily married to my best friend, a proud mother to a squad of fur kids, and a traveler with an insatiable wanderlust. I’m a sports, book reading country music enthusiast, an over-thinker with a huge heart. I speak in fluent sarcasm using inappropriate words more than I should admit, an introvert/extrovert, and someone who values family—both chosen and blood—above all else. My mother’s values of kindness and grace guide me every day, and I strive to honor her legacy in all that I do.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Just lead with a little grace and a whole lot of grit. In all seriousness though, the three most important qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that I bring to any endeavor are strength, resilience, and grace. My heavy background in marketing & business have also helped greatly, but I can’t say for this endeavor that has been in the top 3 of most important.
Strength: is vital as it empowers me to face challenges head-on, to take bold steps, and to lead with confidence even in uncertain times.
Resilience: is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and keep moving forward with unwavering determination, maintaining focus on long term goals.
Grace: My top one and to me the most important; it’s the quality that brings empathy, compassion, and understanding to my interactions. It’s about handling every situation, even the most difficult ones, with poise and respect.
Add in a whole lot of kindness, a side of sass & a splash of creativity and you have a recipe for success… at least for me. Together, these qualities enable me to navigate the complexities of both personal and professional life, maintaining balance and achieving success with integrity.
ADVICE::
For those early in their journey, developing confidence, strength, resilience, and grace is a gradual process that requires both self-awareness and intentional practice. Remember that growth in these areas doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient with yourself, and recognize that each experience—good or bad—contributes to your development. **Surround yourself with good people, mentors and role models who embody the qualities you strive for and seek their guidance as you navigate your journey.
Quick tips on how to build these areas:
– Embrace Challenges: Don’t shy away from difficult situations. Each challenge you face is an opportunity to build inner strength.
– Cultivate Confidence: Confidence comes from knowing your worth and capabilities. Focus on your achievements, no matter how small, and celebrate your progress. Surround yourself with positive influences who uplift and encourage you.
– Adopt a Growth Mindset: View setbacks not as failures, but as learning opportunities. Reflect on what went wrong, and consider how you can improve. This mindset helps you bounce back stronger and better prepared for the future.
– Practice Adaptability: Life is unpredictable, and the ability to adapt is crucial. Work on being flexible in your thinking and approach. When faced with change, ask yourself, “How can I adjust to this new situation?” rather than resisting it.
– Practice Empathy: Make a conscious effort to understand others’ perspectives and emotions. Listen actively. This will help you respond with grace, even in challenging interactions.
– Stay Grounded in Values: Grace is often reflected in how we handle adversity. When faced with difficult situations, stay true to your core values. Let kindness, respect, and patience guide your actions, ensuring that you maintain grace under pressure.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My village—or as some might call it, my tribe—have been instrumental in every success I’ve achieved. I believe it’s naive to think that anyone can accomplish something entirely on their own without the support of others.
While my personal skills and ideas have certainly propelled Gardenia & Graze forward, I wouldn’t be where I am today without my village, my people, my family – both blood and chosen. Without them, I would still be a hollow shell, struggling just to make it through the day.
My success is as much a testament to my own efforts as it is to the unwavering support, love, and encouragement of my family and most importantly my husband. They have been the solid foundation upon which I’ve rebuilt my life. They are part of my very definition of strength and resilience, standing by me during my darkest moments, offering wisdom, comfort, and the reassurance I needed to realize my potential. My chosen family—those incredible friends who have become family—have been equally vital, offering diverse perspectives and experiences that have helped me navigate life with grace.
Together, these amazing people have shaped who I am today, giving me the strength and support to truly thrive.
Honestly, they are just fucking awesome!
