We were lucky to catch up with Annette Whitaker-moss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Annette, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As an author and photographer, I chase new experiences and challenges like a sailor seeking uncharted waters. I dive into the unknown, experimenting with writing techniques for poetry and novels while sharpening my photographic eye, always ready to capture the fleeting light of inspiration.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Growing up in Houston, Texas, I began writing poetry very early. My ability to express myself in that form of writing led to my first book of poetry, One Heart to Another, and later my second book of poetry, Another Heart to Another. My work touches readers’ hearts and souls and features in poetry collections published worldwide. After writing my first book of poetry, I wrote and published my first novel, Good Kid in Trouble, followed by my second novel, Shundra Henderson, Thorns and Roses. Subsequently, the Brotherhood Connections Show, The Queen Silvy Show, The Author’s Lounge Show, The Writer’s Edge Show, and The Review with Joy and Company honored me as a guest on their radio stations and events. My book, Another Heart to Another, was nominated in 2019 for the Christian Literary Awards. I am working on a new novel, Life Realities, for release in 2025.
My creative journey has been diverse and exciting, leading me to explore the world of photography. As a professional photographer, I have taken headshots for authors and individuals, weddings, and special events, and produced many behind-the-scenes images as an Associate Producer for Christian Films and Romantic Thrillers. The expansion into photography has added a new dimension to my storytelling, allowing me to share compelling narratives through pictures and books, all while representing The Promise of New Beginnings!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey as a writer and photographer are curiosity, perseverance, and an eye for detail. My curiosity drives me to explore new ideas and perspectives, fueling my writing and photography with fresh inspiration. Perseverance keeps me pushing through challenges, whether finding the right words for a story or capturing the perfect shot. Finally, my keen eye for detail allows me to notice the delicate traces that bring my narratives and images to life, creating work that resonates with depth and meaning.
My advice for those in the early stage of their journey is to develop curiosity, engage in diverse experiences, and challenge their perspectives. Read widely, travel, and get involved with different cultures. Ask questions that push you to think deeper. For perseverance, set clear goals and embrace the process. Understand that growth often comes from persistence through setbacks. The setbacks, while challenging, are crucial in making you more determined and resilient. Stay committed to the craft, even when progress feels slow. Remember, success is often a result of long-term commitment and consistent effort. To sharpen your eye for detail, practice mindful observation. In writing, rejoice in the beauty of language delicacies; in photography, be inspired by the art of capturing the interaction of light, shadow, and composition. Regular practice in both will refine your ability to capture the essence of every subject.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Family, friends, and prayer warriors have been instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and build the essential skills needed for success. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and wisdom have been the guiding light in my journey. Their prayers and positive energy, a constant source of strength, have significantly reinforced my perseverance. Their honest feedback has sharpened my eye for detail, and with their love and faith, I’ve developed the resilience to face obstacles and the confidence to pursue my creative passions with renewed energy.
