Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hannah Swank. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hannah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve always had a deep connection to my faith and my family, both of which are what helped shape my purpose in life. I often say that God gives each person unique gifts, which in my case, used to seem like a mish-mash of random skills I possessed. But, as I went from working for a small company to starting my own businesses and homeschooling my kids, I realized that these were the exact things I needed in order to excel.
My mission has always been to do my best at the things or jobs that God had entrusted me with. To bring Him glory is the ultimate goal. While I’m definitely not perfect at it, I know that He uses people to accomplish his purposes, even in spite of our shortcomings.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When I started Swank & Company Design in 2013 hoping down the road to leave my job and become a stay-at-home homeschool mom, I knew that I would have to lean on God’s help if this is what He truly wanted me to do. As any stay-at-home mom can attest, the worry of “what will we do all day?” and “how will I keep from becoming a nursery rhyme robot?” were things I battled with constantly. When my husband and I found a small farm for sale in the country, I was elated when God gave me the vision of starting a you-pick flower farm. This was the perfect balance for our family: homeschool in the mornings, work on designing websites in the afternoon, and farm the flowers as needed.
I have found so much purpose in teaching my kids God’s love and grace through the work I do while serving clients with websites and giving the community a beautiful space to enjoy.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I love to learn and research things that are interesting to me, whether that be design, flowers, or homeschooling, among many others. I plan to use this skill in the future as well when new opportunities and interests come to expand my knowledge base and encourage my kids to do the same.
Another skill/mindset I would say has helped greatly is knowing that even if I fail at any of these things, it’s not the end of the world. I’ve got an incredibly patient and business minded husband who enjoys helping me with all of my businesses which has been huge.
Work ethic has to be another quality that has gotten me where I am. I pour myself into each of my interests wholeheartedly, and I hope that my kids see this and understand the value of working hard.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
One of the things I’ve been struggling with as a business owner is how to be the manager of a team. I am forever the encourager and cheerleader of people in general, so having to have tough conversations with employees or giving critique has always been hard for me.
That being said, I have grown as a manager by leaps and bounds as I continue leading teams and learn from past mistakes. My husband leads multiple teams at work and he has given me lots of advice on handling employees.
