We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mai Witcher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mai below.
Hi Mai, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
As clichè as it sounds, I fully focus on what I love about myself. Remembering that I’m not for everybody and remembering those who genuinely love & care about me plays a HUGE role.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Fashion Stylist based in Detroit & New York, as well as a Blogger and Graphic Designer! I have a focus in womenswear for Styling, but lately I have been merging a bit more into menswear and product (like those beauty product ads you might see on billboards & magazines). I’ve even styled for a number of local runway shows and smaller photoshoots.
Recently, I’ve become a part of Thee Ethereal, a black woman owned fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blog based in Philadelphia, as their blogger and editor, and I’ve also started graphic designing on a freelance basis, totally inspired by my experience with brand/website designing and logo making!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Definitely being an open book, but not TOO open. I use to be a complete introvert to the point where I would fail at the easiest customer service jobs because I didn’t want to talk to people out of fear, haha. Knowing the (most) people LOVE people who use their voice has helped me a ton with building relationships on a professional level.
Another quality is being open-minded. It’s so much easier being a creative and letting things flow when your thoughts are flowing, too. Never allow yourself to be close-minded & stagnant and learn to be a sponge!
One last quality & skill I have is to be as organized as possible. I’ve learned this the hardest way with juggling so many projects with multiple people – especially in a creative field where a lot of things are in high demand.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m overwhelmed, I like to shutdown in the best ways. Spending quality time phone-free with my husband and our 2 children or with my girlfriends helps me a TON. Aside from that, spending time with myself, secluded in nature, is my go-to especially when it’s quiet and serene. It’s become my form of “medicine” if you will.
One last thing that I do that I feel is the most important strategy is to pray. I’m huge on talking to God while I’m alone – even if it’s the same type of prayer or if it’s about the same thing I prayed about the day before, haha. Knowing that He is listening, relieves all the stress.
