Meet Henry Schultz

We recently connected with Henry Schultz and have shared our conversation below.

Henry, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

It’s important for each of us to consistently expand our personal music taste. It keeps the group’s creativity vibrant. Listening to new music ignites new ideas in the composition process, and taking feedback from band members with different musical tastes results in original music that reflects our collective influences. It’s always cool to see how a band member’s demo transforms after being performed with the group. It’s also extremely important to regularly remove ourselves from our comfort zones.

For instance, Henry, one of our composers, created a polyrhythmic song with a completely nonsensical melody. Although it appeared to be a questionable idea at first, the group’s open-minded approach allowed it to evolve into one of our standout compositions. (it’s called Sand, please listen to it xoxox)

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m Henry Schultz, the keyboardist and one of the composers for Fusion Illusion, a band I founded in 2021. My vision was to bring together a group of talented musicians and push my creative boundaries. I strive to create music that is weird, artistic, performative, and unique.

Mars, Jacob, and Letizia have been with the band the longest. Jacob is our guitarist, sound engineer, composer, and also serves as our musical director and manager. Mars is our bassist and composer. Letizia is our lead singer and frontwoman. Brandon, our drummer and the latest addition, has brought an exciting new energy to the band with the powerful drumming we’ve been seeking.

The five of us collaborate, infusing each song with our unique styles. Our musical influences include David Bowie, King Crimson, Dirty Loops, Van Halen, Herbie Hancock, Talking Heads, Miles Davis, Brian Eno, and more.

We just released “Trash Panda” on all streaming platforms. It’s an original composition about an abnormally intelligent raccoon living in the sewers of Highland Park.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

On behalf of the band, I can say that three key qualities driving our journey have been our skill in playing our instruments, our passion for creating, and our deep love for music. The best advice I can give to a musician is to listen to music constantly and play your instrument or work on a song every day.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

The band has recently faced a challenging situation with our music repertoire. Some of us have felt that we’ve been focusing too much on basic covers and not enough on original material. It was difficult to perform specific sets and occasionally act as a “party band” when our original goal was to create unique and interesting music. However, over the past year, we’ve introduced more original songs and refined a few to meet our standards. We’ve also enhanced our performances with creative elements, like Jacob using a drill for guitar solos and incorporating ambient noise rock sections into some tracks. Brandon’s drumming style has also brought us closer to the sound we’re aiming for. This just proves how finding a “sound” is a challenging process that requires time and dedication
