We were lucky to catch up with Kayla Cannon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Growing up I always said I wanted to be a veterinarian. I have a big heart for animals, and I didn’t think I would be good at working with people. Then in my early 20’s I had the opportunity to work directly with animals and quickly realized it wasn’t for me. After coming to that realization, I tried many different job fields just to try and figure out where I fit in this world. It wasn’t until I got a job working at a local Credit Union as a Member Advisor that I realized what truly made me happy…. working with people. It gave me so much joy to help the people in my community with their financial needs whether it was approving them for their first credit card, helping them buy their first car and even saving a few clients from sending a scammer all of their money. I continued to nurture my passion of helping people and in turn it helped me to propel my career. I eventually got into management which I also loved but I wasn’t able to work hands on with my members as much so after 3 years as a Branch Manager I decided to make a career change. Everyone around me was telling me “Kayla you have to get into mortgages, you would be so great at it with your personality, natural selling skills and leadership experience”. At first I didn’t think it would be a good fit. I assumed that it was a boring desk job that was very black and white and by the book. As more people tried to convince me, the more curious I became until I finally looked into what the job actually entailed, and boy was I wrong. Being a Mortgage Loan Officer is so much more than looking at guidelines and sitting behind a computer all day. It’s building meaningful relationships with your realtor partners. It’s intense problem solving that pushes your boundaries and knowledge. It’s a constantly changing field that ensures you will never get bored. And above all its the satisfaction of helping the people in my community fulfill their lifelong dream to become a homeowner. For many people this is the biggest purchase they will ever make in their life and knowing that I helped get them there makes me so incredibly happy!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At the company I work for, Movement Mortgage, our entire culture is based on Loving and Valuing people. I take that to heart because every one of my clients are dear to me and this job isn’t just a job for me. I make it my mission to treat every one of my clients with the same courtesy and respect no matter who they are or what they’re needing. Creating a community that focuses on homeownership and building generational wealth when they didn’t think it was possible is my passion! We partner with many First Time Homebuyer programs and even have a few products of our own that are geared towards helping those who couldn’t qualify for a mortgage before, qualify now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1.) Empathy. There’s a big difference between empathy and sympathy and it lies within the heart. To succeed in anything you do you need to understand this and be more empathetic to everyone around you because it will show.
2.) Believe. If you don’t believe in what you do people will feel that and you will eventually fail.
3.) Leadership. Being a “people person” came naturally to me but leading was a whole other story. Learning leadership skills can benefit anyone even those not in a leadership role. It will help you develop the necessary skills you need to handle difficult situations, time management, organization, critical thinking and many other areas in your life. Reading leadership books, taking leadership classes and having amazing leaders to look up to as an example helped me tremendously!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for more realtor partners to collaborate with. I am licensed in the state of Florida and Alabama so if there are any realtors wanting a great lender who will take good care of their clients and offer more products that can actually benefit them, I would love to help! They can call or text me at my cell 850-529-3295 or email me at [email protected].
