We were lucky to catch up with Makayla Marley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Makayla , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence through many trials and errors within the beauty industry and continuing my education in various different parts of esthetics. Time is what really builds an estheticians confidence in this field. I also became the woman I strived to be by pretending to be her day by day. I would think to myself how would she handle this situation ? How would she present herself to others? I “pretended” to be this confident woman every day and then one day I realized I wasn’t pretending anymore. I had become that confident image of myself that I had so badly wanted to be when I first started my career.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I became an esthetician at the ripe age of 17, I knew for a long time that this is what I was meant to do. Having battled with cystic acne at such a young age and the confidence toll it took on me it made me want to understand it and how to manage it, within doing that I wanted to be able to help others with issues within their skin as our skin is the first thing we see when we look at ourselves. I worked at various different spas as soon as I turned 18 and three years ago I opened up my own business, Marlei Skin.
Marlei Skin is a safe space for everyone. Whether you’re dealing with acne, aging, pigmentation, eczema, or if you just need to rewind from the everyday stresses of life.
At Marlei Skin there is a mix between the holistic side of skin treatments such as lymphatic drainage, advanced massage techniques, aromatherapy and sound therapy and advanced treatments such as enzyme therapy, nano-needling, chemical peels, dermaplaning, light therapy, and so much more.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The best qualities you can have as an esthetician are an ability to connect and understand people, the constant motivation to advance your education, and the ability to have that magic touch that makes client fall asleep in the treatment room.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Anytime I’ve ever felt overwhelmed, I look back on all the other times I’ve felt like that. I think to myself “okay the world didn’t end this time when I was handling a lot so I’ll be just fine this time too”.
With any career you’re going to have times that you feel stressed, but life gives you what you can handle and it just so happens that I can handle quite a bit and make the best out of it.
