We were lucky to catch up with Stephanie Colmenares recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
As a person who has been living with a chronic illness, Type 1 Diabetes, I have learned to overcome burnout by slowly adding healthy habits into my life. These habits include drinking a gallon of water a day, daily movement, taking vitamins, reading a book, prioritizing sleep, and focusing on the positives around me! Developing a positive, growth mindset is imperative for anyone living with a chronic “challenge.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I created “Thriving Diabetic” on Instagram to help others with T1D with self acceptance. In addition, created books and journals which I share with others, they are sold on Amazon and through the Instagram platform!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Developing a growth mindset when it comes to learning has always been very important for me! That is, I understand that I will never know it all and I need to continue to learn about my “chronic challenge” because it changes all the time. I would tell others to continue to embrace the process of developing a growth mindset and be open to learning! Also, finding people who are on a similar journey can make things more enjoyable for you.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I think a person area of growth for me over the past year has been pushing past my mental limits. I embarked upon the “75 Hard Challenge” over this last year and it has really helped me built more mental strength. I pushed past my limits by working out even on the rainy days, even in the cold, and even when my entire body was sore. This challenge helped me get more consistent with habits and in turn, helped me get through some tough weeks. When we have healthy habits engrained in us and we aren’t feeling our best or falling into a burnout phase, they help us get back on track faster. Consistency is key for anyone and even more so for people living with chronic illnesses. Now, I workout even when I don’t “feel like it” because I know it will make me feel strong and confident in myself. When we make promises to ourselves (like joining a challenge) and we preserver, our self doubt diminishes and we can push past any limits we place upon ourselves.
