We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Iris Delany. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Iris below.
Iris, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from always wanting better for my community, chosen family and myself. I have spent the majority of adolescence stagnant from growth and when you’re coming from somewhere where everyone wants you stay down, you kinda just want to do the opposite. I have to constantly develop, master and re-learn the skill of showing up for myself when others simply can’t. That’s not necessarily anybody’s fault as we all are going through something however, I had to learn to convert that built up energy into becoming the woman I wanted to be through passionately creating art. As a photographer, I thought I was only limited to photographing models that aren’t myself. Through self portraiture, I feel seen.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What makes being a photographer so special is being able to meet a lot of passionate people and capture their unique personalities. The ability to curate human expression for a vision is a unique form of art I am grateful to be apart of. This Pride Month was a very special one to be apart of as I photographed many talented queer and trans people/talent in the Denver area. I am excited to expand my photography and keep creating with those who inspire me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Have faith in yourself and journey
2. Stay consistent in what you love to do
3. Be true to yourself and happiness
Remember to stay patient with yourself and learn how to give yourself what you need when your body or heart tells you. Everything you want you are capable of, keep going!
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me was give up on me. Once I came out as a trans woman I was disowned, taken off the family insurance and their will (they didn’t have one, they just wanted to be petty). This has taught me that I am worth fighting for what I want and deserve.
