Meet Tj Cunningham

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tj Cunningham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

TJ, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience is deeply rooted in my upbringing in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, where dairy farms stretch across the landscape. Growing up, I often heard my mother say that farming is done for the love of it, not for the money. That idea—of doing something for the love of it—has been deeply embedded in my thinking since the very beginning of my artistic journey.

Art, to me, feels like an uncertain harvest—something essential and vital, despite the challenges. My grandfather, who was both a farmer and an artist, left a legacy that has influenced my approach to life and creativity. The dedication I witnessed in those who worked the land through uncertain times became a powerful example of perseverance and determination.

It’s no surprise that my favorite motifs are rural America and livestock—they represent the life I know and the values I hold dear. Early in my career, I faced a breaking point when a commission was refused, and it felt like there was no way forward. But I drew on the lessons I learned from those around me, and I got up the next day and kept painting. I didn’t choose this path for financial reasons; I chose it to create meaningful art that brings people joy. That determination to keep going, inspired by the values I grew up with, has carried me through the toughest moments and continues to define my journey as an artist.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m TJ Cunningham, an oil painter deeply connected to the landscapes and rural life of Vermont, where I grew up. My work focuses on capturing the quiet beauty and emotional depth of the places I know best—small farms, wooded hills, and serene streams that have inspired generations of artists before me. What excites me most about my art is the challenge of conveying not just the visual aspects of a scene, but the atmosphere, the mood, and the sense of place that make these landscapes so meaningful.

In addition to creating art, I’m passionate about teaching. Through my platform, ‘The Art Journey,’ I guide other artists in mastering the techniques of oil painting, with a special focus on landscapes and natural scenes. It’s incredibly rewarding to see students grow in confidence and skill, particularly as they learn to bring their own interpretations to the subjects we explore.

Looking ahead, I’m always exploring new ways to connect with people who share my love for art and the landscapes that inspire it. Whether through exhibitions, courses, or simply sharing my work online, my goal is to continue creating pieces that resonate deeply with those who encounter them.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Bet on Yourself: Confidence is crucial, but it’s something you have to cultivate. Our minds can be fragile, and our thoughts often corrosive, so it’s essential to build confidence in yourself and your abilities. If something can be done, believe that you can do it. Art isn’t a gift any more than being in shape is—it’s a skill you can achieve with dedication. Trust that you can master the skills needed, and don’t let doubt hold you back.

Start: Don’t wait for the perfect moment to take a risk or make a change. There will never be a “good” time to upset your life and pursue your passion. Even if it’s just a small step, start today and learn as you go. The journey begins with that first step, so don’t hesitate.

Persist: Persistence is key. Don’t stop, even when things get tough. Look back at how far you’ve come if you need encouragement—your progress is proof that you’re growing. The effort is worth it, so keep going and push through the challenges.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

My ideal client is someone who truly loves art, whether they’re just beginning their journey or have been painting for years. They’re eager to learn, open to new techniques, and appreciate the joy of being part of a supportive and creative community. They’re excited about the process of growing as an artist, value the time spent honing their craft, and enjoy the idea of engaging in weekly painting sessions where we can all learn and improve together.
