We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wesly Walker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wesly below.
Wesly, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes directly from my faith in God. Growing up in rural Louisiana in a town called Bunkie, I was raised in a family where faith in God transcended everything. It didn’t matter the denomination or organized religion. At the end of the day, all that mattered was whether you had faith. For me, I have faith that God granted me this gift of music. For that, I’m eternally grateful as it has not only opened doors, but has also served as an emotional outlet. Recognizing that it’s a gift, I know I can not waste it. Music is meant to be heard and connected to. Because of that, I don’t care how many “no’s” or “ghosted” replies I endure. I was meant to play music.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Well, to put it bluntly, I’m the saxophonist and founder of Phoenix Rising Jazz, a premier band based in Missouri City, TX (Suburb of Houston). Named for the mythological “phoenix”, the band has undergone many iterations since its original founding in Dallas, TX in 2013. Despite facing the challenges of finding committed members who wanted to develop a sound, the right pieces came together and we’re now one of the preferred artists for those who want to take their events to a new level. We’re not a “cover party band” that just plays top 40 hits. We strive to bring musician ship and vibes with a blend of multiple jazz-tinged covers and original music. In fact, we have our first singles now available on Soundcloud ( https://soundcloud.com/phoenixrisingjazz?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing )
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being authentic, having Faith, and having the ability to connect with people. Being your authentic self will always peak interest over inflated gimmicks. If you change who you are for the sake of “getting fans” you’ll lose yourself in the end.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for collaborations with other dope artists, musicians, and singers. Especially those who understand music is about creating vibes, not just a way to get a paycheck.
