Meet Nichagarn Chiracharasporn

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nichagarn Chiracharasporn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Nichagarn, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I always focus on building a routine rather than trying to set up an image of who I should be and what I want to be. I don’t deny that it is very normal to dream of the best version of yourself because that is a good start however, for me specifically I like to keep that at the back of my head rather than make it my top priority for motivation. I focus on building a routine that I can keep doing without having to expect anything in return which sounds counterintuitive, but it has help lessen my worry about how others perceive me when I’m focusing on building a productive routine.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I compose and perform music. What I love about composing is that I get to be creative and express myself. Art and music for me can be a very non-specific form of communication that leave an audience or listeners up for their own interpretation, or it can try to convey a very specific thing which is why I love play around with the expectation of how art should be and challenge it. My works are in both concert music and film music because I believe that composing music in any medium can help me explore more of my identity in music.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The first quality I would think of is collaborating. Art and music involve people and understanding them not just the audience, but the people you’re working with. It is very important to have collaborating skill and good communication skill. The second quality would be curiosity. in my experience, being curious drive me to find an answers, a new approach to make art which bring out my creative and fresh idea to my own composition however, that is done by the good foundation of knowledge and tradition that I am trained to do. I believe that the understand of the tradition is a good foundation that leads to us being more curious and finding a better question to challenge the tradition and think outside the box. Lastly, perseverance. Being in art and music industry can be extremely hard for maintaining a stable career. I believe that the idea that you should be able to love what you do for a living in order to have a good and fruitful life can not be applied with most artists since it is very hard to make money solely on getting commissioned and freelance when you just starting out. Which is why we need not only love, but perseverance to keep us going on our journey.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Lately I feel burned out which shouldn’t be surprising after finishing my undergraduate at Juilliard this past May. Luckily I have the longest summer break I’ve ever have before I start my master degree in Composition at UCLA and I have been taking a break from composing. I still try to listen to new music from composers who I never listen to before, revisit some old pieces that I used to study, learn new pieces in piano. The challenge is not the burning out itself now that I am taking my break and it has been helping, rather the challenge is how to not feel unproductive. I told myself at the start of the summer that I am not going to push myself to compose, I’m going to try to go with the flow and compose anything that I want without rushing myself like when I have to finish my piece for concerts when I’m at school. Despite that, I cannot help but feel unproductive and that’s the challenge I am facing because I want to give myself a break but I cannot do that without feeling guilty. I’m still navigating through it and hope to come out of it soon!
