We recently connected with Zevy Blokh and have shared our conversation below.
Zevy, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
What a tough question. Am I resilient? Looking at the definition of the word ‘.the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.’ I don’t think I am particularly resilient. Failure knocks me down. Hard. I lean on the people around me to get me upright again, to set me back on the path. Perhaps, in an attempt to find some satisfying answer to this question, I can point to my frequent experience of failure and disappointment as my best tool for overcoming them. At this point, identifying moments where my expectations haven’t been met is so familiar to me that I find I can simply clench my jaw and stare into the future for support, knowing that this too shall pass.
That reminds me of a story I turn to now and again, shared with me by Leland Maschmayer. It goes something like an elderly farmer is presented with a string of events that range from seemingly lucky to unlucky and his response to everything that happens is ‘this too shall pass’. Throughout the story, each event shows itself to be because of something else that happens, either something really good or really bad. The moral of the story, that phrase ‘ this too shall pass’ grounds me. It reminds me that my current life situation is fluid and can change. And I can appreciate what I have now.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I built Arcjet around this idea that there is no right way to design something or build a business or a brand and I am very excited to build out a business that communicates that to our clients. In addition to our core design offering, my goal is to build a robust marketing offering to our clients. The trick is maintaining the focus on our core expertise while allowing complimentary services to be offered through industry partners.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. There is no right way to do anything: A therapist taught me that there is no right way to make money. At the time I was all torn up about having to choose between having a traditional job or going out on my own and she told me that there was no correct way to support myself. I think about that on a daily basis, extending that model to a lot of other things in my life. There is no right way to build a business, build a brand, get clients, be a dad, etc.
2. Having a Schedule: As someone who really struggles with depression and status anxiety, I need to be busy in pursuit of some end goal otherwise I feel like I’m a boat with no wind, no traction and that sets off a whole spiral of negative thoughts and emotions.
3. Always be sketching: Paper and Artboards are fungible – don’t be precious with your canvases`. Dupe a frame even if you make a single change. I found that it’s the fastest way to land on the next great idea, just sketch, iterate, try anything.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
As a new business, we want to be specific about who our working partners are in order to pursue our ideal path of growth. We look to work with new or smaller teams in the startup space. SOme of the sectors we look to continue working in are Industrials, healthcare and finance.. We look to work with businesses that are committed to seeing real growth in their business and understand that brand plays a vital component in isolating their competitive advantage.
