Meet Philippe Gerber

We were lucky to catch up with Philippe Gerber recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Philippe, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

I have been creating for a long time. Experience helps. I also know time is precious. When the inspiration isn’t here, it’s just time to relax, meditate, go outside for a while. Everyone’s creative process is different, so it’s important to experiment with various strategies to find what works best for you. In my particular case once all the levels of stress are back to normal, Iget back to the studio and get to work. Everyone’s creative process is different, so it’s important to experiment with various strategies to find what works best for you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Philippe Gerber is an award-winning French film/TV/trailer composer, specializing in horror and psychological thrillers. He is currently based in Philadelphia, USA. His scoring credits include the horror feature “El Laboratorio”, selected for the Medellin Horror Film and Bogota Film Festivals (Colombia), the psychological thriller “The Soul Catcher” presented at the International Boddinale Film Festival in Berlin (Germany), and the horror “The Doxey Boggart”, which won Best Sci-Fi Documentary Feature award at the Gallup UFO festival in New Mexico (USA).

Philippe is a featured composer for the acclaimed trailer music house Music Junkies (“The Exorcist/Believer”, “Deadpool 2”, “Insidious: Chapter 3”) based in Los Angeles and owned by the pioneer of trailer music Ruben Nava. Philippe’s work is featured in horror and sci-fi trailers for internationally successful feature films, TV series, and advertising campaigns.

As a musician, Philippe has played live intensively and recorded in the USA, Europe, and in the Middle East. His band Heat From a DeadStar signed an exclusive deal with Boston-based producer Rick Harte / Ace of Hearts Records; their first album “Seven Rays of The Sun” was distributed by Matador Records. Philippe has also released 9 full-length albums of dark industrial instrumental music with his solo project, JOHN 3:16.

Growing up in France near Paris, Philippe was introduced to the horror genre at age 6 by his mother, who was deaf and enjoyed horror films for their expressive visuals. Philippe would wait for his siblings to fall asleep, sneak into the living room, and hide behind the couch long into the night, secretly sharing in his mother’s addiction to horror.

Philippe is also an award-winning photographer and videographer. His work has been published in National Geographic, ABC News, Washington Post, Atlas Obscura, Huffington Post, France Inter, and more. Philippe has a PhD in Materials Science and a postdoctoral degree in Nuclear Physics, and worked as a nuclear researcher for the French government before switching careers to pursue music full-time.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Passion, hard work, and work ethic.

Believe in yourself and trust your instincts. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Consistency is key. Set aside time each day or week to work on your art. The more you practice, the better you’ll become. Remember, every artist’s journey is unique, so embrace your path and enjoy the process of growth and discovery.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Both my parents helped me get into art. My father loved photography and I learned a lot from him. My mother is a painter, and she taught that the true development of creative ideas requires patience.
