We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nick Ranelli. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nick below.
Nick, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
It’s an exciting process to find purpose in one’s life. My purpose is going through an altering phase while remaining at what I believe to be its foundation. Inspiring the world to invest in themselves and explore what they are truly capable of through their passions. The idea of saying, “I want to do XYZ.” and making that a reality tends to be a concept that scares people. This intrinsic fear comes from how society has altered human nature. This alteration is to seek comfort and avoid discomfort. Another way to phrase my purpose might be to inspire people to embrace discomfort to create growth within themselves. In addition, another portion of my purpose is to explore what I am capable of within myself.
I’ve been climbing for roughly eight years and coaching for five years. When I was in high school, I went through a few mental health issues surrounding a particular piece of my family history. Through this pain, I learned that one’s self-worth is not defined by the situations life puts you in; one’s self-worth is defined through the actions taken in that situation.
I developed my purpose by handling these issues all by myself. I overcame these struggles alone, and in doing so, I emerged more robust and with purpose. Again, this purpose has undergone some alterations. However, the foundation of this purpose has not changed. At its core, my purpose is to push my limitations and inspire others to do the same. I want to be able to say, “I want to do XYZ,” and make that a reality instead of an idea or even a dream.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a professional climbing coach and climber, I am the owner of Primal Movement, a climbing brand that has evolved from a side hustle four years ago to a dedicated mission in the past year. This transformation has propelled Primal Movement beyond its initial status as a small side hustle, allowing me to work with numerous climbing athletes across the US as their coach and mentor. Together, we explore the climbing journey, embracing discomfort for growth, and uncovering the unique passions of each climber.
I am a coach and an athlete. For the last eight years, I have competed in climbing competitions across the US and have been pushing myself as an outdoor athlete. I specialize in the bouldering and lead disciplines of climbing.
Owning my own company and brand has allowed me to help people beyond my local reach. I offer both in-person and remote coaching services. I started solely with 1-on-1 services and have since expanded to having multiple competition teams with athletes across the US and recently added our newest program, which offers online classes.
As an athlete, I am currently transitioning from a focus on competition climbing to outdoor climbing. This shift also marks the beginning of my journey as a filmmaker, where I will be creating films to share the stories of my ascents. I am incredibly excited about this new direction!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The broader concept is to develop a process-based mindset and avoid being controlled by the end outcomes you desire. The three qualities within this mindset are patience, confidence, and intelligence.
Be patient and learn to appreciate the growth process in itself—almost appreciating the process more than the desired outcome.
Be confident in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, you will almost certainly not succeed. If you do believe in yourself, you will succeed. Irrelevant of time, if you stay on the proper path and believe in yourself, you will get there.
Be smart with the process. This includes taking the specific actions you need to take to grow and eventually succeed in your journey. You must also be clear about what you’re passionate about and why you want to embark on this journey.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months began roughly one month ago, and I would also say I am still making that change.
A few months ago, I experienced a few big life changes that placed me in a headspace of reflection and change. This headspace allowed me to become even clearer about my passion for climbing and growth and why I want to continue on my journey as a coach and an athlete.
I wouldn’t say this change is complete; it’s only just beginning, I think. The clarity is what allowed me to make the decision to focus solely on outdoor climbing and coaching as opposed to competition climbing. I am extremely excited about this decision, and I definitely feel more in touch with my passion for climbing than I have in the last year.
