Meet Scott Robertson

We were lucky to catch up with Scott Robertson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Scott, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

Yes, I’m an optimist. I admit it. Optimism is a mindset that I’ve had as long as I can remember. And it’s a choice that I’ve made as long as I can remember. But where does it come from? I would have to say, like most gifts, it comes from God. There are many reasons why something might fail, why money will come and go in and out of our lives, but God has already won. There isn’t a battle here — there isn’t a fight and we know how the story ends. So no matter what could ever possibly happen down here on Earth, the end game of eternal life is already decided for me. Knowing that, it’s pretty hard to see life any other way than positive. And yes, bad things happen to everyone, but it’s really how you see it and how you deal with it that matters. I don’t believe that things happen to us and then we magically become “happy.” I believe we choose to be happy and then we are able to see all of the great, amazing things that this life has to offer.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

When entrepreneurs struggle with bad, boring and ineffective marketing, I fix it using Premier StoryBrand™ Messaging and PR/Content Marketing. Marketing is VERY misunderstood in our world and there are a lot of people doing it who have no idea what they’re doing (I think that’s true for every profession). But when you do things in the right way, marketing can be this incredible, amazing thing that grows the business but more importantly grows the relationships with customers into something fantastic. That’s our real job — the relationship. Taking care of it, growing it, building it and that includes not doing anything stupid to screw it up. One great place for clients to start working with me is the StoryBrand Marketing Assessment/Report. It’s a very educational custom report that shows companies where marketing needs to really begin in order to be effective. Here’s a link to this amazing, free resource. https://storybrandmarketingreport.com/assessment?ref=scottrobertson3

PR is equally misunderstood and today, it’s WAY more complicated and nuanced. PR (media relations/publicity) has always been about helping the press, but we in the USA have lost a TON of media jobs through layoffs, consolidations, etc. And 98 percent of what Americans see, hear and read comes from SIX major corporations. That is dangerous for our country because the ‘watchdog” of the free press is no longer in the yard watching and very few Americans know this. But for PR it means there are less media doing the job that was meant for more people and thus, needing a LOT of help. That’s where PR can be of service – being that bridge between media needs and client offerings and wants. Our country needs that — we need PR to be that.

I’m a fan of balance and so in my personal time, I play music in various bands and groups. I love to play in dive bars and backyard parties because that’s where the real people are. The people who’ve had a very hard week and they just need to hear that one song to make everything alright. I want to be the musician playing that song for them. During Covid, we saw just how much people need to get together and sing, dance, laugh. We cannot ever allow any force to take this away from us again because the cost is simply too great. I learned about myself and why I still love playing music during that time and I hope to play music for as long as I possibly can.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Good, clear writing — Being able to write clearly and command words has been the bedrock of my career. Being a great writer is similar to being a great musician, both require practice and the idea that you’re never good enough — you’re never done. Both are a journey to see just how good you can get.

Good judgment — A lot of people like to say “common sense” but my career has taught me that sense is anything but common because people don’t always share the same view of the world. I have a good judgment and I’ve used to create this life and help so many companies along the way. I’ve always been great at assessing downside risk of various ideas, programs, etc and shutting anything down that could damage the brand. You don’t see that as much today and that’s why you see so many brands losing massive market share and brand equity due to dumb choices.

Sense of humor — Hubbard said, “Do not take life too seriously—you will never get out of it alive.” You could put that on my tombstone because even at 54 years old, I joke around like a kid. I love comedies (especially from the 1980’s when things were actually funny) and I really enjoy seeing stand-up comedians like Nate Bargatze, Joe Rogan and Jerry Seinfeld. But having a good sense of humor really eases the tension of the business world like nothing else.

My advice to folks early on their journey is this — Love God. He planned your entire life before you were born so just relax, it’s going to be great. Try not to worry too much and really enjoy the ride. Read—a lot. Take in a lot of opinions different than your own and use them to challenge your thinking.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

Comfort vs. Growth — I know a lot of things that can help business owners, but sometimes I get comfortable with my own clients and my life and maybe I’m not stretching myself to reach even more people. But I do my best teaching on social media almost daily, writing books and posts and recording videos. Marketing keeps getting worse and AI certainly has not helped the quality improve. But I’ve always said that I will do the best that I can for as long as I can. And that is true for my company, music and really my entire very blessed life.
