We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Heisa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Optimism is full of layers and it begins with knowing that life is by no means perfect. Despite the circumstances I was raised in as a child, my family was and still is encouraging, welcoming, and loving. Those affirmations were part of the building blocks for optimism. It comes with appreciating the small things in life such as a stranger smiling at me as we cross paths walking down a street. The more you can be observant, open your mind to conversation, differing viewpoints, walks of life, and the kindness others show in the most unbeknownst ways, the more you see the beauty and opportunity all around you. This, I believe, is the culmination of optimism.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a creative at heart who has always had a passion for animals. It seems that wherever my journey has taken me, the path has always lead me in a direction where my artistic side has been involved. While I have a bachelors in fine arts and sciences which an emphasis in interior design, I have spent most years as a buyer for a local San Diegan retailer which includes 10 locations where I truly grew with them as a freshman in college until present day.
When the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown occurred, like many of your readers, I had the time to do some self reflection and ultimately picked up a camera again. Ironically at the same time, I was invited to be a part of a behind the scenes group for a dog centric business which included some very talented and inspiring photographers. I began practicing on my handsome rescue dog named Zeppelin and soon enough, all I could do was eat, think, dream photography. Fast forward to today, Dog Haus Photography was born.
Never did I think my two passions would collide to creating this business, but I believe it’s a necessary service based on my own experiences. I grew up as an only child, so my family pets were basically my siblings. My own dog, a German Shepherd named Pepper, was the absolute best. She was always there for me throughout the good and bad days…and of course the milestones. When I moved away from my family home to go to college, it wasn’t until then that I realized how important she (and all my pets) were in my life as I felt I had a hole in my heart.
Our pets are a part of our family and oftentimes our best friend. I heard a quote recently that said, “The only thing dogs do wrong, is not live long enough.” (Rob from Musterdogs). They bring constant companionship and unconditional love to our every day life that oftentimes can’t be replaced by anything else. Think about every moment you walk in the door and you are instantly greeted with your dog excited to see you with that wagging tail going 100 mph. It’s that endless joy, laughter, and bond that I strive to capture as photographic art for my clients. I hope is 20+ years down the road, my clients will feel that special feeling every time they look at their walls and memories from that experience to last a lifetime.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication, drive, and curiosity have been the most impactful qualities in my journey. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, communication is critical for all aspects of life. My biggest piece of advice in relation to that is be ready, willing and able to communicate (your point for example) in at least five different ways because we all interpret messages differently. I think drive is inherently part of us, but if you aren’t feeling it, start to pursue activities you’ve never tried or focus more of your time on hobbies or what you may naturally gravitate towards. If you follow your curiosity and are willing to listen and learn, you can be welcomed by many interesting things a whole world that you didn’t even know existed. And when the time comes, never be afraid to speak up and ask the questions because if you don’t, likely no one else will.
When you put both all three together, I believe you have a trifecta of qualities that can lead to connection and new opportunities.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always happy to meet others and see what collaboration opportunities exist! Not only do I photograph my clients pets, I also provide commercial photography services for pet industry businesses. If you are in need of updated imagery for your website, social media, packaging, etc, or you may want to learn more about how I can help your business, please don’t hesitate to reach out through either my website or social media.
