Meet Van Der Megerdichian

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Van Der Megerdichian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Van, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in the Armenian spirit and the collective experiences of our people. Armenians have a storied history marked by perseverance in the face of adversity. From the harrowing days of the Armenian Genocide to the relentless quest for new beginnings across Europe, America, and the Middle East, our journey has been one of rebuilding and renewal. Each wave of displacement, whether due to genocide, civil wars, revolutions, or other upheavals, has been met with unwavering resolve and an indomitable spirit.

This enduring spirit of perseverance is a cornerstone of our identity. Rather than yielding to hardship, or surrendering to the weight of misfortune, Armenians have always put their heads down and worked tirelessly, never succumbing to the temptation of complaint and working relentlessly, transforming adversity into opportunity. This enduring work ethic is a legacy passed down through generations, producing a community that excels in diverse fields and across disciplines.

The Armenian work ethic is not merely about hard work; it’s about the relentless pursuit of excellence and the unyielding commitment to build something meaningful, no matter how many times we are called to start anew. It’s about the quiet strength that drives us to succeed against all odds, the humility to begin again when necessary, and the pride in creating a better future for ourselves and our communities.

For me, this legacy is not just a source of inspiration; it is a living testament to the strength and resilience of our people. It fuels my dedication and drive in everything I do, including my work with Zartonk Media. At Zartonk, we strive to reflect this ethos by shining a light on the stories of our past and present, advocating for justice, and building a platform that empowers Armenians everywhere.

The Armenian work ethic is a powerful force, one that continues to shape our narrative and inspire future generations. It is this unwavering commitment to resilience and excellence that defines my work ethic and guides my journey.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My journey has been a confluence of my academic pursuits and entrepreneurial aspirations, each phase contributing to the professional path I now tread. I began my academic journey at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where I immersed myself in the study of history. This was more than an academic choice; it was a passion to further my understanding of the currents of time that have shaped civilizations, particularly the resilient narrative of the Armenian people. My undergraduate years at UCLA were followed by graduate studies in finance at Columbia University and economics at the London School of Economics (LSE) culminating in dual master’s degrees. Each institution offered a unique lens through which I could analyze and interpret the world, equipping me with a robust analytical framework and a strategic mindset.

Today, I channel this blend of historical insight, financial acumen, and economic understanding into my role as co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Zartonk Media. At Zartonk, we are not just storytellers; we are stewards of a legacy, bearers of a rich cultural heritage that we strive to keep alive through contemporary narratives. My role involves orchestrating the myriad elements that constitute our operations, ensuring that our mission to inform, inspire, and unite Armenians is executed with precision and passion.

Being an operator is where I find my professional joy. I relish the challenge of designing and implementing systems and mechanisms that streamline our processes and enhance our productivity. It’s about creating a seamless workflow that allows creativity to flourish without losing sight of operational efficiency.

What excites me most about our work at Zartonk Media is the potential to impact lives. Our content resonates with Armenians around the world, providing a sense of connection and belonging. We are continuously innovating, exploring new platforms, and expanding our reach. Whether through new content series, community events, or collaborative projects, we are committed to amplifying the Armenian voice.

In sum, my story is one of bridging past and present, homeland and diaspora, of blending academic rigor with entrepreneurial spirit, and of dedicating my efforts to a cause greater than myself. At Zartonk Media, we are not just building a brand; we are nurturing a legacy, and it is a privilege to be a part of this transformative journey.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my ongoing journey, three fundamental qualities stand out as the pillars of my personal and professional growth: (1) Armenian historical and cultural awareness, (2) the commitment to providing value, and (3) an unwavering attention to detail.

Firstly, Armenian historical and cultural awareness has been a foundation of my identity and work. Understanding the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of our people, the rich mosaic of our heritage, and the enduring spirit of resilience that courses through our history has provided a profound sense of purpose. This awareness is not merely academic or historical—it is a living, breathing part of who I am. It has guided my decisions, fueled my passion, and anchored me in moments of doubt. For those early in their journey, I advise immersing yourself in the stories, traditions, and lessons of your heritage. Let these narratives shape your worldview and inspire your mission. Embrace your roots, for they are the source of your strength and creativity.

Secondly, the commitment to providing value has been an essential driver of my work. In every endeavor, I have strived to create something that goes beyond personal gain—a contribution that benefits others and enriches a collective. This ethos is at the heart of Zartonk Media. By focusing on delivering meaningful content and fostering connections, we aim to uplift and empower vessels of the Armenian cause. For those starting out, I recommend identifying the unique value you can offer. Seek to understand the needs of your audience or community, and dedicate yourself to meeting those needs with authenticity and passion. When you lead with value, success follows as a natural consequence.

Lastly, an unwavering attention to detail has been crucial in my journey. The smallest elements often hold the greatest significance, and meticulousness can transform good work into excellence. In both the strategic planning and the day-to-day operations at Zartonk Media, paying close attention to detail ensures that our work is not only accurate but also resonates deeply with our audience. For those at the beginning of their path, cultivate a habit of measurement and methodicalness. Whether it’s in your craft, communication, or planning, attention to detail reflects a commitment to quality and a respect for your work. It demonstrates a level of care that distinguishes you in any field.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful decision my parents made for me was sending me to an Armenian school. This choice shaped my identity, instilling a deep sense of Armenian pride and fostering an imperishable connection to my heritage.

By enrolling me in an Armenian school, my parents ensured that I was enveloped in the embrace of my own people and future curators of our culture. It wasn’t just about academic learning; it was about being part of a community that breathed the same historical air and shared the same cultural heartbeat. This environment allowed me to delve deeply into our history, traditions, and the enduring legacy of our ancestors.

Within the walls of Ferrahian, the Armenian school I attended, we were not merely taught as students, but also as custodians of our heritage. I delved into the profound depths of Armenian literature, art, and history, learning about the incredible achievements and unyielding spirit of our forebears. This education was more than academic; it was a journey into the heart of our collective identity, a journey that shaped my soul and spirit.

The Armenian school was a sanctuary, a place where I could develop a strong sense of self and community. It was here that I felt the unbreakable bonds of kinship, the pride of belonging to a lineage rich in tradition and history. The friendships I forged were more than connections; they were lifelines, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and mutual support.

This foundational experience has left a lasting mark on my life and work. It has fueled my passion for preserving and promoting Armenian culture through Zartonk Media. It has also underscored the importance of remaining true to our roots and working towards a future where Armenian identity continues to flourish.

My parents’ decision to send me to an Armenian school was not merely an educational choice; it was a soulful investment in my future. It cultivated a sense of purpose, pride, and responsibility that continues to guide me. For this, I am eternally grateful, as it has shaped not only who I am but also how I contribute to the broader narrative of our people.

In essence, this decision was like planting a seed that continues to grow into a resilient tree. Its roots run deep into the soil of our heritage, and its branches reach out hoping to offer shade and strength to future generations. This is the legacy I strive to nurture—a flourishing symbol of endurance, identity, and hope.
