We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eric Broser a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Work ethic was not something that I was born with, nor was it taught to me by anyone. It was something that took me a long time to truly develop. Very early on I decided that I wanted to work for myself, and not be anyone’s employee. Thus I started my own business shortly after I graduated from University. My love was exercise and bodybuilding, which led me to create an in home personal training company. The process of starting from the ground up was not easy, and I quickly learned that if I wanted to be successful, I could not “half-ass” it. Since I was running this business on my own, I was in charge of advertising, receiving inquiries, consults with potential clients, landing the clients, booking, scheduling, accounting and of course, doing the actual work itself. It was quite challenging, but most certainly taught me that meaningful things are rarely handed to you. Instead it is entirely up to you to work diligently and tirelessly for them. And this was just the beginning for me. As I began new ventures and started other businesses, I definitely upped my game and learned to work both harder and smarter.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In my 30+ year career in the fitness industry, I have literally done it all. Amongst some of what have been involved in includes personal training (both in gyms and homes), owning a gym, working and consulting with some of the most successful supplement companies, competing as a drug free professional bodybuilder, serving as a competition judge, guest posing at bodybuilding shows, writing (as a columnist and featured contributor) for magazines such as IRON MAN, MUSCLE AND FITNESS, MUSCULAR DEVELOPMENT, FLEX, PLANET MUSCLE, NATURAL MUSCLE and MUSCLE MAG INTERNATIONAL, authoring 4 books centered on training techniques/programs,, doing hundreds of podcasts and interviews, and much more. Currently my focus is on competition prep coaching with amateurs and pros, working with athletes, helping all types of individuals transform their health/physique via my online guidance, creating valuable social media content, working on my You Tube show (“Merlin Approved,” on the FULL TIME BODYBUILDING TV channel), and running my own supplement company – SpellBound Nutrition. While all of these things allow me to make my living and pay my bills, the most fulfilling part is, and always has been, helping people achieve their goals. Whether it be getting onstage, winning a pro card, making it to the Olympia, performing more effectively at a sport, building a better physique, creating enhanced health and well being, and/or working one’s way back from an injury – all of this is of equal importance to me. Most of my clients become my friends, and some even like family, because I truly care about each and every one of them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my most important attribute as a coach, mentor and teacher is something I mentioned previously, which is just how much I truly care about the individuals I work with. I am just as passionate about helping my students/clients achieve results as I have ever been about my own. I always try to give everyone MORE than they pay me for and go “over and above” in all that I do. I even limit the amount of clients I will take on at any one time, so as to always be able to give everyone all of the attention they deserve. Honestly, truly “caring” I feel is #1. Next is my “attention to detail.” Whether it comes to writing a new article, creating a novel training protocol, developing a client’s diet/workout regimen, or explaining exercise performance, technique or variation on camera, I always make sure to try and cover every vital aspect (of what I am teaching or the information I am dispensing) so as to provide as much valuable and utilizable information as I can. I take my time, choose my words carefully, think about what my “audience” needs, and attempt to be as clear and concise as possible. Finally, one of the most valuable pieces to my personal success puzzle as a trainer, prep coach and workout system innovator has been my relentless experimentation and recording of results. You see, although there are some very basic “rules” when it comes to manifesting gains in muscle and losses in body fat that are somewhat “universal,” there is still much variation from individual to individual (as to the specifics of what they respond to most readily). In other words, what works for one person might not be entirely optimal for another. So, through careful experimentation (on myself and 100’s of clients) over the course of many years, I have been able to develop a myriad of strategies that are successful with almost everyone. My training programs address all of the physiological mechanisms that induce hypertrophy (muscle growth), since this phenomenon is multidimensional. And when it comes to diet, the experimentation with different methods has allowed me to more easily troubleshoot, and discover how to keep everyone progressing, despite how uniquely each of us can respond to various macronutrient combinations. While these three things are what I consider to have been the most impactful on my journey, each person must find within themselves what their own greatest strengths are and fully develop them – while at the same time also working on any weaknesses that could hold them back from achieving success.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love to collaborate, or work with, other like minded individuals in the bodybuilding/fitness industry. I have partnered with supplement companies (and now own my own), healthy meal delivery services, fitness clothing lines, and bodybuilding magazines/websites (usually as a writer). However, one type of company I’d love to represent/work with an exercise equipment manufacturer, or someone who has some type of machine/gadget that helps with one’s recovery, muscle soreness, injuries, workouts, etc. I also enjoy writing, and always welcome anyone who wants me to contribute to a magazine, website or even books.
