Meet Dr Shan Jackson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr Shan Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dr Shan, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

For me, resilience is more than just a quality; it’s a fundamental aspect of who I am, developed throughout years of growth, personal struggle, and a steadfast faith in the ability to transform. My vulnerability gave rise to my resilience; it was there that I once felt helpless and lost but eventually found the strength to slowly rebuild my life.
I was put to the test at an early age by several obstacles I had to overcome while growing up in Flint, Michigan. Growing up in Flint, a city noted for its water crisis and financial woes, was not easy. The terrain was difficult, and the cards were frequently stacked against us. However, it was in this furnace of misfortune that I discovered resilience’s primary lesson by avoiding adversity but rather by meeting it head-on and refusing to let it define you.
I struggled as a child with anxiety and sadness, feelings that were frequently too strong to put into words. Throughout my adolescent and adult life, I battled feelings of fear and inadequacy. But there was a tiny, tenacious voice inside of me that persisted even in the worst of times. It was this voice— this spark of resilience—that urged me to seek a way out, to find a path to healing and strength.
The decision to take charge of my health was a turning point in my path. I realized that I had to take care of my body first to get over the mental and emotional agony that had been plaguing me for so long. I made a significant shift in my eating patterns, emphasizing nutrition’s role in promoting physical healing and mental and emotional recovery. Although it was a difficult journey, I started to feel stronger, more in control, and more hopeful with every nutritious meal and little win.
I learned from this experience that action builds resilience; we must make deliberate decisions that support our beliefs and objectives even in the face of adversity. It all comes down to starting somewhere, no matter how small, and keeping going forward even when there is no clear route ahead. I eventually came to believe in my abilities and my capacity to conquer obstacles, no matter how difficult they appeared.
When I reflect, I realize that my drive stems from a strong sense of self-worth and a steadfast determination to let my circumstances destroy me. It is the outcome of years of arduous labor, introspection, and dedication to leading a meaningful life. It’s about knowing that I have the inner capacity to adjust, develop, and flourish no matter what happens.
I want to show through telling this narrative that resilience is a quality that we all possess. It’s a
quality that we can all develop via our deeds, decisions, and thoughts; it’s not a characteristic just of the brave or the powerful. And it’s when faced with hardship that our fortitude comes through, getting us through the rough patches.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Dr. Shan Jackson, and my journey has been shaped by a deep passion for health, wellness, and helping others achieve their best selves. My practice as a licensed health coach, mental health professional, nutritionist, and motivational speaker centers on enabling people to achieve mental and physical balance and fulfillment. My narrative is one of metamorphosis, stemming from my battles with anxiety and depression, which motivated me to find practical solutions to improve my well-being.
I provide a holistic approach that covers both the physical and mental elements of health, which goes beyond traditional health and wellness coaching. My purpose as a practitioner is to assist clients in reaching their objectives by advocating for doable lifestyle adjustments that result in sustained success.
Whether I’m helping someone navigate nutritional therapy, providing mental health support, or inspiring them to overcome personal challenges, my motivation stems from the idea that everyone can thrive given the correct resources and assistance.
Witnessing the significant impact that these improvements can have on people’s lives is what most excites me about my work. Nothing is more satisfying than witnessing a client who was formerly helpless and stuck start to take control, acquire self-assurance, and lead a happier, healthier life. It serves as a potent reminder that achieving wellness is a journey that involves growth and empowerment along the way as much as the final destination.
I’m especially committed to raising awareness of the connections between physical and mental health. This is the reason I stress the importance of diet and lifestyle as the cornerstones of treating conditions like depression and anxiety. Not only is it important to consider what we eat, but also how we live—how we relieve stress, move our bodies, and take care of our minds.
Currently, I’m focused on expanding my reach to help even more people through online workshops, seminars, and one-on-one coaching sessions. In addition, I’m writing a book that will explore my holistic health philosophy and offer helpful tips and personal narratives that have influenced my path. This book will serve as a guidebook for anyone wishing to take control of their health and well-being, helping them to change their way of thinking as well as their way of life.
I’m organizing several wellness sessions in addition to coaching and blogging, to give those who want to jumpstart their journey toward better health immersive, hands-on experiences. These retreats will incorporate aspects of physical exercise, mindfulness, and nutrition in a nurturing and restorative setting.
What I want people to understand about my brand is that it is based on sincerity, empathy, and a sincere wish to change the world. My methodical approach is customized to meet each client where they are and assist them in reaching their goals. I firmly think that gradual, steady progress is what makes a big difference, and I pledge to support my clients at every turn.

My brand is about transformation, empowerment, and living a life that authentically represents your values and identity.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Resilience: Throughout my journey, resilience has been essential, particularly in the moments when I had to deal with my struggles with anxiety and depression. One of the most important traits that has shaped who I am now is my capacity to overcome obstacles and keep going for my goals in the face of difficulty.
Advice: Resilience is a skill that takes time to master, especially for individuals who are just starting. Accept obstacles and setbacks as opportunities to improve rather than running from them. Adversity should be viewed as a transitory obstacle rather than a lifelong hindrance.
2. Curiosity and Continuous Learning: My insatiable curiosity drove me to study a wide range of topics, including psychology and nutrition, and to never stop learning new things. My desire to learn more made it possible for me to combine my many areas of experience, which improved my capacity to provide comprehensive assistance to others.
Advice: Never give up on learning. Remaining inquisitive and receptive to novel insights will distinguish you in any area. Make time to read, go to seminars, and establish connections with people in your industry. You can provide more to the people you serve if you have more knowledge.
3. Empathy and Compassion: These two qualities have always been central to my work. It has been possible for me to connect intimately with my clients and provide them with the assistance they require to recover and prosper because I truly care about their challenges.
Advice: Develop empathy by making an effort to understand others and actively listening to them. When you are kind to others and work to lessen their suffering, compassion grows. These attributes improve interpersonal relationships and increase the significance and effect of your work.
I would stress the value of self-awareness to individuals who are just starting on their journey. Recognize your areas of strength and growth, and don’t be scared to ask for assistance or mentoring when you need it. Hold fast to your principles and allow them to direct your choices and deeds. Finally, remember that self-improvement takes time and that every step you take, no matter how tiny, counts as progress.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My greatest area of development over the last 12 months has been in developing a deeper comprehension and application of holistic well-being. This time in my life has been a turning point because of the strong emphasis on combining the concepts of mental health, emotional stability, and physical health into a coherent and all-encompassing approach to personal growth. Although I have always had a strong interest in health and wellbeing, this year presented me with the opportunity to broaden my views and more fully and meaningfully live up to the values I support. When I first started my adventure, I was dealing with the pandemic’s aftereffects. The physical and psychological effects of COVID-19 were wreaking havoc on the world, and I was not exempt from my struggles during this period. Even though I had previously been successful in reducing stress and anxiety with dietary adjustments and lifestyle modifications, the pandemic’s uncertainty and isolation pushed my resilience to the breaking point. But instead of giving in to these demands, I saw this as a chance to develop and progress.
I immersed myself in study and introspection, trying to figure out how I might improve my physical and mental health even more so that I could help my clients more effectively. As a result, a more comprehensive approach to wellness was created, one that stresses the value of physical fitness and a balanced diet while also acknowledging the crucial roles that mental and emotional well-being play in general well-being. I started delving deeper into techniques like emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and meditation after realizing that total harmony in the body, mind, and spirit is what constitutes true health rather than merely the absence of illness.
This growth path also required a major mental adjustment on my part. My awareness of the value of self-compassion and the necessity of striking a balance between ambition and self-care increased. Having always been motivated by a desire to serve others, I realized that I could not give from an empty vessel. After coming to this conclusion, I began to emphasize my well-being in addition to my clients’, adopting a more sustainable approach to my profession. I discovered how to pay attention to my body and mind, take breaks when necessary, and face difficulties with patience and grace.
In reflecting on the past 12 months, I am struck by how much I have grown personally & professionally. My perspective on life has become more balanced, I have a deeper grasp of holistic wellness, and my relationships with people have been stronger.
Looking forward, I am excited to continue this journey of growth, knowing that the lessons I have learned in the past year will serve as a strong foundation for the future. I am dedicated to deepening my understanding, improving my methods, above all, maintaining the values that have led me overall this era of profound change.
