We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sharnai Angram-ivory a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharnai, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my mom, who was an incredibly strong woman. Despite being a single mother, she raised my sister and me with so much love and strength that I didn’t fully realize how much she may have struggled until she was no longer with us. She shielded us from her worries because she wanted us to enjoy a happy, carefree childhood. After she passed, I learned to be even more resilient, driven by the desire to make her proud every day.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My newest passion is content creation, where I dive into what I like to call “all things girly.” This includes makeup, fashion, skincare, girl talk, confidence, and tips on becoming a woman. Content creation excites me because it allows me to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the years with a broad audience, far beyond the impact I had as president and vice president of women’s organizations, or in my roles as a friend and sister. I have so many hobbies and skills, and content creation gives me the space to explore and grow in those areas. It’s something I truly love and that brings me happiness.
When I’m not filming or editing, I’m working in a hospital, another passion of mine. I’ve been obsessed with all things medicine since I was a child, inspired by watching my mom beautifully & bravely raise us while dealing with breast cancer and my grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. That experience made me want to become a positive force in the healthcare field, where I strive to make a meaningful impact on patients and their families.
Outside of my work and content creation, I have a few favorite pastimes. I love singing at the top of my lungs, creating choreography, performing Broadway numbers in my living room, watching dog and cat videos, and cooking vegetarian recipes I find online.
At the heart of everything I do is my family, especially my siblings, who I always say are my “best friends by blood”. I’m so thankful for them, and my ultimate goal is to be able to provide for all of them in some way, so we can all live easier and happier lives. I’d like to emphasize my big sister, Bonique, who took me and my sisters in after my mom’s passing and raised us like her own. I owe her the world for her enormous love and selflessness.
I’m also thrilled to be launching some exciting new series on my Instagram and TikTok. These will cover makeup and fashion, as always, but will also dive into my healthcare career for those interested in entering the medical field, and share vegetarian recipes for anyone looking to cut meat from their diet. Even though I only started my content creation journey a few months ago, I’ve come so far in such a short time. I’m excited for what the future holds as I continue to build a community with my audience and fellow creators. It’s only up from here!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, empathy, and the courage to be different. Resilience has been crucial because content creation is like an emotional roller coaster—one day you’re gaining 1,000 followers a week, and the next, your numbers might drop for a month. It’s easy to get discouraged if you focus too much on the numbers, but I’ve learned to stay resilient and not let it get in my head. You really have to be passionate about content creation, sticking with it because you genuinely want to share your knowledge and yourself with the world.
Empathy has played a big role in helping me connect with my audience. It’s not just about putting content out there; it’s about thinking of concepts that will resonate and be understood the way I intend. I think my empathy really helps me with that, allowing me to craft videos that people can relate to on a deeper level.
Lastly, the courage to be different has shaped who I am today. Especially in high school—a time when many are trying to fit in—choosing to be myself helped me develop my unique sense of style, mindset, kindness, and maturity. If I had chosen to follow the crowd, I wouldn’t have all of the distinctive qualities that set me apart and make me special.
For those starting out, my advice is to embrace these qualities. Build your resilience, because there will be ups and downs. Cultivate empathy to truly connect with your audience. And most importantly, have the courage to be different—it’s what will make you stand out and find your unique path. Keep going and ignore the numbers!
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
A challenge I’m currently facing is coming to terms with the fact that my plan isn’t always going to align with God’s plan. I’ve always had big dreams for my life, and I truly believe I’ll achieve them, but I’m learning that the journey won’t be a smooth, straight path. There are certain milestones I haven’t reached yet, due to a mix of factors—some within my control, and some outside of it. I’m working on embracing every part of the journey and continuing to push forward toward my goals, without beating myself up for not hitting the deadlines I set for myself.
The lesson I’m learning is to show myself grace, and I encourage you to do the same with whatever you may be struggling with. Remember that God is in control.
