Destiny , so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self discipline comes from my purpose. I have the need to keep going. I have goals I’ve set and I am outrageously disappointed in myself if I don’t achieve them. I know that no one is going to pull me out of bed and say “Make your dreams come true.” Honestly, people have their own lives to focus on. But what helps me rest at night is knowing that I’m putting 100% of the gifts God gave me to use. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. I’m working now on giving myself room to grow. Learn through my mistakes and keep going no matter what!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started my professional music career in 2018. My first single was released in February of the next year. In October 2019, “Pineapples by Destiny” was born after wanting an official brand of items associated with my music. The jewelry portion of the line really took off and here we are three years later growing and expanding.
I love making my items by hand because I get to sprinkle a little love and joy into each piece. I’m sure in the near future, I will need help with orders because we are growing. However, I plan to always have some custom, handmade items made just by me. I love taking colors that may not typically go together and making them blend. I love when people order Pineapples for gifts and celebrations. They really are perfect for any occasion.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Beading and designing items is neither an easy nor cheap task. It’s tedious and the materials are quite expensive. Three qualities that have helped me the most are patience with myself, willingness to experiment, and budgeting. For anyone getting started with anything, I always say the same thing: Just start! You can grow later. I encourage people to start on with their own minds first…look for inspiration later. Really trust yourself and what you think is good. You’ll find that your art (in any form) is so much more fun to do when you just go with your first mind.
Sometimes I overthink and it takes the fun out of creating. In all honesty, you have to do what works for you.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle right now is time! I love singing and entertaining and it’s my true passion. However, I love doing pop up shops and getting in a good groove when designing merchandise. My goal for the 2023 year is to set a schedule and stick to it. So this year, each week will have a Pineapples day that is dedicated to that passion only.
