We recently connected with Christy Fleming and have shared our conversation below.
Christy, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I am the firstborn child of two very young parents who have built a legacy of love and family through faith, hard work, and commitment to one another. My parents taught me through action that life is unpredictable, that we cannot control other people’s choices, or even our own circumstances, but we can control how we move forward in response to any given situation.
All my life I have watched the people closest to me build businesses in times of economic strife, battle addictions, and fight to keep marriages, businesses and bank accounts from dissolving. More than anything else, my Catholic faith gave me courage to trust something greater than myself to see my family through the trials of life.
My husband and I have 4 children. From 2020 to 2024 our world exploded with change that we did not see coming, nor were completely equipped to navigate. In four short years we were faced with 2 graduations, 3 weddings, 3 new sets of in-laws to work holiday schedules around, 5 grandchildren, 1 teenage pregnancy, 3 homes to help plan financing, move into and fill up, and a parent-plus loan. At the same time we had been caring for a terminally ill parent. We endured the deaths of three close family members. Even more fuel to the fire was starting an extended family business, selling an established business, and additional career changes for both me and my husband! Let’s just say the stress has brought me to my knees and humbled this perfectionistic, controlling, codependent, Christian mama!
I am learning alot on this journey, mostly to surrender my worries and to trust in God’s provision. I do not resent the difficult times. Instead, I thank God for the opportunity to embrace my family more than ever, and to continue to develop trust for my creator. With God’s nudging hand, a developing skill-set, and a heart for service, I have begun my career as a certified life coach. It is my passion to share what I have learned about resilience, faith, and dedicated action with other women to help them navigate rough waters and to create a clear path to their own goals.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a leader of youth ministry in my local parish for over 20 years. In my experience I have trained hundreds of teenagers in leadership, communication, motivation, and faith development. I owned and operated a small retail business for 19 years that began as a flea market vendor, and grew into an independent brick and mortar business. I have also been a 4H leader and involved on various community boards and chambers. As a certified life Coach I help ladies of all ages navigate seasons of change in their life with mental clarity, attainable action steps, and accountability. I have a special interest in helping young adult single women discern their next steps after high school or college, as well as helping moms (new and seasoned) manage the ever changing roles of motherhood without losing their own identity.
I currently offer 2 customized private coaching packages, that are 4 or 8 weak programs. My future plans include a Woman’s Wellness Retreat, as well as workshops that offer effective, practical tools for the unique parenting obstacles mothers face today.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three important keys to growth for my journey have been faith, having a natural passion for what I do, and the ability to courageously use the resources I have been given, or to surround myself with people who can help me learn what I do not know.
It is important to not let pride get in the way of recognizing what you are not good at, or that you need help. Building relationships with people is essential for learning and growth. Inviting God to walk with you in your day, and keeping your heart and eyes open to the opportunities He provides allows you to see possibilities you may otherwise miss.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The single greatest thing my parents ever did for me was to introduce me to Christ, They nurtured that by placing me in front of other people to support my faith formation, enrolling me in a Catholic school, praying together at home, and taking our family to church weekly.
