Meet Kata Walters

We recently connected with Kata Walters and have shared our conversation below.

Kata , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I am sure my strong work ethic comes from my parents setting that example but also my heritage. My grandfather went to New Zealand at 14 from Croatia ( then Yugoslavia) and worked in the gold mines. He didn’t speak a word of English. He made a life for himself there and I know that is in my blood. I have a slightly stubborn attitude as far as ” I can do anything” and that strong will has pushed me beyond my known capabilities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a newbie property developer. I currently have 3 builds under contruction ( one high end modern home and two inner city condos). I have recently transitioned into development after spending several years flipping, renovating and managing rental properties.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

When I look back at my journey to date, coming from 20 years in the fashion industry as a model then a late pivot in my 30’s into Real Estate, I think the best advice I can give anyone starting a new business or undertaking a career change is – Take that unknown next step forward. You have to lead with your heart sometimes too. Fear of change and trying something new will always follow big decisions. Acknowledge it and push forward. I believe it is a practiced skill to be able to set aside your fears and give something new a go.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

One thing that has stood out to me in my first 6 months in development is how few women are in construction and the development field. I have been on the job site a few times and contractors have asked to talk to the builder or the owner. I have also accidentally been called “sir” by a lumber company vendor, he was apologetic but said they don’t get too many women calling in the orders. As far as overcoming this? I think action is the answer. I can show I am dedicated, serious and I want to be taken seriously. Action is going to be the best way. Let people see the results.
