We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean And Amber Mccarthy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean and Amber below.
Hi Sean and Amber, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
“Purpose” could be tied into the “why” of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle. There were so many avenues that our life together could take, either together or parallel paths. For us, growing up in this Conejo Valley area, we always yearned for a community space that was 1) open late, 2) if food/drink associated, used clean ingredients, and 3) had a creative component. Those were our WHY’s for opening up Five07.
Upon the initial inspiration, we began traveling the country and discovering how delicious coffee could be; so we added that to smoothies and light fare. Intentional music choices, local collaborations, representative art: everything served the purpose of a community space that could be a third space for all of the good people of our hometown.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Building on our first community space off of Arboles/the 23, we were inspired to invest in the 101 side of Thousand Oaks and at the beginning of this year opened up a coffee bar inspired by Italian espresso bars, with a standing bar and easy freeway access.
We’ve been able to feature art/murals from some of our favorite local artists and recently added espresso and latte flights on custom wooden boards fabricated in LA. It’s a community space that is tailored to the action and hustle of a city’s downtown. Our goal for this space was to be a go-to for anyone who loves well made coffee and a quality quick conversation.
We have also added the Turkey Day Dash to our portfolio. We always loved, growing up, how it brought people together in activity + community on a day that’s centered on gratitude. This will be our second year running it!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
We will oftentimes be asked, as graduates of Moorpark College and CLU, what advice we’d have for those considering starting a business. And it might sound cynical, but we usually say “mm probably don’t” … UNLESS the object of your creation simply *has* to exist. For us, we can’t imagine a world where the Conejo Valley doesn’t have spaces throughout the day to gather in conversation and creativity. That is something that has remained a driving force during the 100+ hour workweeks, the debt, the inflation, the shutdowns… This season of running a business had a unique set of challenges, but no matter when you embark on a journey, obstacles will come. “Increasing shareholder value” just wouldn’t cut it for us.
Adding on to this base-level necessity for the betterment of society, a love for humanity (we experience all sorts of situations both internally and externally that could shake our resolve if it wasn’t deeper than the moment) and bringing it all together our spiritual faith as the foundation of it all: running a company without that lens would lead to all of it being either purely economical or for our own glory, which is much too vapid to fuel consistent diligence.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Start With Why by Simon Sinek has been instrumental. It provides that reminder that a business exists for the WHY – for us, being a creative community space – and the WHY and HOW can pivot based on what best meets that end. We originally opened with minimal food, but as we discovered that the community sought a space with that when meeting with friends, we upgraded our equipment and uplifted our menu offerings.
Staying disciplined in maintaining and honing in on the WHY can help to overcome all of the everchanging WHAT’s.
