Meet Rebecca Demeter

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Demeter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Rebecca with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethic from my parents. My dad immigrated to the US in the early 90s, and my mom, my brother, and I followed a few years later. I grew up with a mom and dad who worked hard every single day to provide a great life for myself and my siblings. No matter how tired they were, they always made time to be there for us.

I learned a lot from them. To never give up, to be professional and also to be kind to others. Seeing their example only made me work harder and be better each day.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a writer and director based in Los Angeles. I currently work in the location department of various TV shows.

I am focused on directing full length movies. I have been directing short films for about 3 years, and I’m hoping to get into larger festivals and get connected to the right people to make my dreams happen.

I just finished my latest short film “Heart Problems” and it premiered at the LA Shorts Film Festival a little while ago. It’s about a mother and daughter’s long night in the emergency room after the mom thinks she is having a heart attack.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities that are most impactful in my journey are my perseverance, work ethic, and creativity. I wouldn’t be able to get very far without any of them. Los Angeles is a tough city to make an impact in, because so many other talented people want the same thing as you do. But I know that my drive and love of movies will help me to succeed and make my dreams of directing feature films come true.

My advice for folks early in their journey is to be as clear as possible about your goals. It’s always good to know what specific things you want to accomplish, because that will become a map to guide you through tough times. Another thing is to be honest with yourself about what your strengths and weaknesses are. Lean into your strengths, and work on the things you aren’t as strong in.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I know it’s a bit strange, but when I feel overwhelmed with work or having a creative block or my day just isn’t going well, I like to lie down on the ground! I put this into my short film “Happiness is an Illusion”, and the moment is even on the poster! I take a few deep breaths, close my eyes, and try to focus on my breathing. Something about lying on the ground pushes away all the negative thoughts and emotions, and it helps in such a simple yet profound way.
