We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jake Cameron. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jake below.
Jake, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
It’s hard to please everyone. Of course, there will be people that you come across who will not like you or will not see your vision or will not want to work with you for reasons un-known. And that’s okay because what anybody thinks of me is out of my reach and it’s something I have no control over. At the end of the day I focus on working with people who want to work with me. People that like when I’m around and are genuinely happy to see me. I try my best to stay away from the haters and nay-sayers and not force myself to be liked by people who just bring me down.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in Eastern Europe and immigrated to Canada when I was 6 years old. Growing up in Vancouver, I spoke no English and it was hard making new friends. I would watch English movies and cartoons to try and pick up new words everyday. That’s when I fell in love with cinema. I remember walking down a street one day with my family and seeing my very first movie set. I’ve never seen anything like it before and was so intrigued. That was the first time acting sparked my interest. Growing up, I played a lot of spots. Mainly hockey and soccer. Soccer was a sport I excelled at so I decided to go back to Europe after high school and try my luck. I stayed for 5 years playing all around Europe including Slovakia, Austria and Wales but my body couldn’t keep up and eventually suffered a career ending injury. I came back home heartbroken and lost without any idea as to what I’ll pursue next until I remembered that feeing I had when I was a little boy and saw that movie set. I’ve decided that this is something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life and would be willing to work hard for it. I’ve hit many bumps and heartbreaks along the road but that hasn’t discouraged me from my dream.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, what has helped me most trying to pursue something as complicated and challenging as acting is to have something on the side to support me. I have my own house painting business which I really enjoy doing. Growing up in an Eastern European house hold, I was taught at a very early age what hard work is and to not be afraid of it. Instead to embrace it and to not complain. After all, to have work is a great blessing. I’m also a huge believer in taking care of your body so naturally I try my best to hit the gym and eat clean whenever I can. Going to the gym keeps me motivated and hungry for more. There also comes a time when you do need to unwind and take a break. I do that by watching old school movies. Especially Humphrey Bogart films from the 30’s and 40’s. And occasionally will enjoy a game of poker or pool at the local pub with a Negroni. Have a side hustle, stay fit and have fun!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with directors and producers that are fans of old school cinema. During my free time when I relax at home and watch film noirs, and seeing old New York or old Hollywood, I always fantasize being on that screen and making something similar. I always feel like I was meant to be born in a different generation. In a different time so to be able to re-create a period piece from the 40’s or 50’s and put it on film would be the ultimate goal for me. And just to be able to work with like minded people who have the same passion for film would be a dream.
