We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gn$. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with GN$ below.
Hi GN$, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
This is such a good question. I guess I should start by saying, I did not have an easy upbringing by any means necessary. I grew up in a very traumatic environment, and the only way I was able to get through it was having strength and resilience. I couldn’t even tell you where it comes from, my best answer would have to be god because something higher then my self had to be pulling me through those moments. Now as an adult, after overcoming so many dark things, I know my power. I know what I’m capable of. I don’t feel there is really anything in this world that could ever completely break me down. Because if I survived that, I can survive anything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a singer, rapper, producer, songwriter and multi Instrumentalist. I have been releasing music professionally for about five years now but have been creating it almost my entire life. I’m originally from Baltimore, Maryland and moved to LA to pursue my dreams of becoming a superstar. But a goal like that requires a lot of mini steps, and can be a climb. But I truly believe if you work hard enough at something with full dedication at some point it has no choice but to pay off. As of Right now in my career I’m focused on growing my fan base, and getting my foot in the door of the music industry. I’m also currently working on an album, which I’m hoping to release by the end of the year. I’m very excited to share this story, it’s some of my favorite music I’ve ever written and produced and came from a very vulnerable place. All I really hope is that it helps someone else who might be going through what I was experiencing when I wrote it…that’s what my whole brand is and all I ever want to do with each song I release.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would probably have to say having drive, passion, and resilience are the most important attributes to carry. Being an independent artist is not for the weak and you will receive a lot of no’s before you receive any yes. You will more than likely have times where you struggle financially to support yourself and also your career. It can take a long time before you see results, and that can be frustrating. That’s why having that resilience is important. And you have to be so passionate about what you’re doing that no matter how hard it gets you could never see yourself doing anything else. Also, a big thing I would recommend to any artists trying to pursue their dreams is to never let the spirit of comparison take over. It is very easy to look at other people doing what you do and feel like you’re not far enough but all that will do is break your spirit. Everyone is on their own journey and you have no clue what theirs was, and your path is going to be completely unique to you. A friend of mines named Iris gave me this analogy once. “Comparing yourself to others journey is like being at a restaurant and watching others get chicken tenders and being mad that they got their food before yours, but you have filet mignon and lobster coming.. the chefs special. And that takes a little longer to cook. Be patient” and that’s something I always tell myself when I find myself comparing…I want filet mignon haha. Not that there’s anything wrong with chicken tenders, those are good to and is what that person desires, but you want something completely different.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I would definitely say the power of now. That book is special and life changing, especially for someone who struggles with anxiety and constantly worrying about the future or being stuck in the past. It is a great reminder to be present and know that In doing that anything I do desire will naturally come to fruition.
