We were lucky to catch up with Jason Fitzgerald recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jason, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve been a runner since 1998, first with cross country and track at the high school and collegiate levels, and then with road and trail racing as a post-collegiate and Master’s athlete. There’s no way to be a successful runner without a strong work ethic and that has bled into the rest of my life, too. Running has taught me the value of discipline, self-efficacy, consistency, and being process-oriented.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started Strength Running in 2010 because I knew I could help runners avoid the mistakes that nearly sidelined my own running. After finishing the 2008 New York City Marathon in 2:44, I developed a severe ITB injury. I was sidelined for six months, wondering if I would ever be able to run pain-free again.
But that injury transformed my thoughts on running healthy and injury prevention. My training changed dramatically and I finally “cracked the code” of my constant injury cycle, running a new PR at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2:39:32.
I was the overall 1st-place winner at the 2011 Moraine Hills Half Marathon, 2012 Maryland Warrior Dash, and the 2013 Potomac River Run Marathon.
Strength Running is where I share what I’ve learned to help you be a better runner.
On the Strength Running Podcast, we host the brightest minds in the fields of physical therapy, sport psychology, strength training, run coaching, performance, and nutrition. This has informed our training programs and coaching services, which help athletes solve problems, reach their goals, and ultimately race faster.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Like with running, I had a ‘never give up’ mentality that helped my business become successful. This level of consistency helped me grow steadily over time, expanding my audience and offerings so that now, Strength Running is one of the most popular running podcasts in the country with a thriving business and community of runners. Without consistency, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude, I would have given up years ago. Always believe that success is right around the corner because that belief will keep you going.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Influence by Robert Cialdini is one of the best books on persuasion and the psychology of sales, helping me gain a deeper understanding of how to communicate with potential clients and the broader community in a more impactful way. Storytelling – or being persuasive – is arguably one of the top skills that any leader must develop.
