Meet Merissa Cole

We were lucky to catch up with Merissa Cole recently and have shared our conversation below.

Merissa, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
Generosity is one of my favorite characteristics to use in my business and life in general! It is a two way street in the way that it not only greatly benefits those you are able to bless but it warms your own heart to give to others above and beyond. The heart we have for generosity comes from our relationship with Jesus. His display of generosity points to his love and kindness towards us. So from that comes an overflow we get to give to others simply because we were loved first. We love seeing people surprised and feeling cared for when we take the extra steps to give over what is expected.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We are a wedding planning company biased in Houston Texas serving couples that are passionate about their marriages and the importance of their day. We feel as if we have a greater purpose in this industry beyond just planning weddings. This business exists to honor God first and love people second. We are able to provide our couples with an experience they are truly happy with because of our desire to serve them in any way we can with a heart full of joy. The parts of this job that really shines our strength is our flexible services to meet our couples needs and our detailed eye to be able to see the things they might not. We thrive on pulling together an event in the details and managing a timeline effectively. It is our honor to serve our couples and to be a part of the beginning of forever for them and their families.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Our 3 most impactful qualities I believe we have are our sacrificial heart, design skills, and day of management. The first can be developed just from caring for others and wanting their highest good. The second comes natural to me but can absolutely be developed as you start this journey and this skill has grown for us in our involvement in styled shoots. For the third, this comes from experience. In the beginning offer your time to planners for day of assistance to gain day of experiences and after each event evaluate what could be improved upon and what worked well to help level up the next event.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
What has worked well for us is recognizing what exactly are our strengths and what are our weaknesses. Once I knew what I was good at and what I had a passion in I worked to develop those attributes in myself. Then I surrounded myself with people that their strengths were what my weaknesses are. In doing this we have a team that is well rounded in skills and everyone is able to use their time on things they enjoy while still fulfilling all the needs our business has. This works well because it takes so much less time to have people develop their strengths and we are all happier in the process. And everyone is able to be an expert in few things and we are able to share the load of what it takes to run the business.
