Meet Kierra Myers

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kierra Myers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kierra , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from my upbringing. I was taught that if you can help others, then you help them! My grandmother always made sure that we understood 1 John 3:17, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”. So this is something that I live by.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Career Services Small Business Owner. The name of my company is The Career Doctor. With my brand I specialize in providing affordable Career Services to underserved communities. I believe in putting people in those positions to work or back to work! There are tons of people who are working in low-paying jobs because they don’t have the skills to compete for the higher-skilled jobs employers are struggling to fill. To that point, it’s more important than ever for companies to recruit from talent pools they may not have previously considered. That’s where my services are there to fill in the gap of providing skills, education, training, and resources such as resume reviews, resume writing, mock interviews, and LinkedIn optimization.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that I think were most impactful in my journey is my curiosity, my courage and confidence, and my communications skills. Having a curious mind helped me to learn as much as possible about employment and career services. My advice for people who are early in their journey in the terms of how they can best develop or improve on these is always be willing to learn, always be willing to grow. Even a child can teach you something so never feel like you’re superior to anything or anyone.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing that my parents did for me was allow me room to be who I wanted to be. They allowed me room to do what I wanted to do. Yes, I went to college but there was no pressure about it. I graduated and I have three degrees but entrepreneurship is my passion and they have been supportive through every idea, every thought, and every goal.
