Meet Greg Fisher

We recently connected with Greg Fisher and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Greg, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
From a young age, I have been captivated by the allure of possibilities in business and entrepreneurship. My optimism can be traced back to the unwavering support of my mother, who championed my myriad of ideas, even when they faltered or seemed unattainable. One particular memory is the inception of my online dining guide at the age of 20. Despite its uncertain prospects, my mother, having earned money from running karaoke shows, backed this venture. Her belief in my potential laid the foundation for my future successes. Equally instrumental were the incredible individuals I had the fortune to collaborate with, none more important than my business partner of nearly a decade, Alex Benko. Though our skill sets may differ, our shared philosophies on life and business have propelled us forward on our entrepreneurial journey.

Optimism proves its worth when confronted with the most daunting of challenges. Two defining moments that tested my resolve were the COVID-19 pandemic and the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill. In those trying times, the weight of uncertainty threatened to overwhelm me, and the responsibilities of safeguarding my employees and navigating the difficult financial landscape seemed impossible. However, surrounded by a stellar team and bolstered by my positive attitude, I found the strength to persevere. Those experiences taught me a vital lesson: storms do pass, and others are weathering similar tempests. Seeking support from one’s network is paramount, while meticulous planning and steadfast execution pave the way to brighter horizons.

Looking back upon my accomplishments serves as a wellspring of optimism, a source of motivation that propels me forward. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey spanning close to 15 years, I have achieved remarkable milestones. Multiple successful businesses have borne fruit under my guidance, earning accolades and awards for their exceptional growth. Notably, our inclusion in Inc. Magazine’s esteemed list of the 5000 fastest-growing companies in America, ranking at an impressive 359, stands as a testament to our dedication. Equally significant are the incredible individuals I have had the privilege to encounter, whose presence has enriched my personal and professional life in immeasurable ways. I advocate distancing oneself from those who do not align with your positive mindset.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Born and raised outside Detroit, MI, I moved down to Destin, FL when I was 17 as my family seeked a Florida lifestyle. After working a few jobs, I found myself naturally interested in Tourism, where I decided to take that passion to the University of Central Florida to get my bachelor’s in hospitality management. While in college, I also found an interest in internet marketing. I started an online dining guide while a junior in college, which helped me develop my diverse skill set as an entrepreneur. I moved back to Destin, FL shortly after college, sold my dining guide and embarked on a long journey as a serial entrepreneur starting with my company, TripShock.com. Tripshock is an online marketplace that helps travelers find exciting things to do while on vacation. We employ 90 individuals from all over the world and offer over 1,500 tours mainly in the Southern USA. Some of our largest destinations include Key West, Miami, Panama City Beach, Destin, New Orleans, and Gulf Shores.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Work in the field for as long as you can in order to gain the necessary experience. Spend nights and weekends learning skillsets that you’ll need.

2) Understand that the best growth is slow growth. Building a foundation first will help you weather the storms (so to speak).

3) Your team needs to feel included and motivated. Host parties and video conferences where everyone can participate. Build great culture and no one will ever want to leave.

4) Be frugal, but not cheap. Even when you see your company generating healthy profits, it’s important to watch everything closely.

5) Setup a few different KPI’s and track everything. Start a journal to help you jot down your thoughts

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My business partner Alex Benko has been a large part of my success. He also pushes me to keep an open mind and always be looking out for the next opportunity.
