Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dallas Anderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dallas, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I’m able to stay optimistic through faith. The good thing about getting older in experience. I’ve had some amazing times in my life so far, along with some really low times. When you’re going through the worst you can’t see the outcome, but looking back you see you survived it all. I just continue to have faith that no matter what happens, it’s what’s supposed to happen.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I draw, paint, and stuff. I’ve been drawing all my life and got a certificate in it even. I did nothing with it for a long time, but started as a freelance artist about 7 years ago. I’ve been labeled a “pop artist” since, as most of my work references pop culture. I worked on comic book art for the majority of the time, but I have taken a hard lean into painting recently.
Honestly, I have no idea where I’m headed with my art. I’ve been completely silent lately, and haven’t been promoting myself at all. I don’t even really know what I’m working towards at the moment. I’m focusing more on creating right now without an idea of what the end game is going to be.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Everybody creates differently. Just because what you do doesn’t look like someone else’s, or what it looks like in your head, doesn’t make it bad or wrong. Art is art, and some of the best are “mistakes”. Don’t listen to anyone but yourself. Lots of people will tell you what you should do, or even present themselves as someone that will help you, but most of the time this hurts your journey more than helps. It is also true that to be successful in art it is more who you know rather than what you can do, so you do have to network, but stay true to who you are because in the end it’s you that’s creating something that will hopefully last much longer than you will.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents were always the best in everything, but especially supporting me in everything I tried from sports to art. They gave me all the tools I wanted and needed from a young age, even enrolling me in Ink Spinner art school in grade school. Not only could I not be the artist I am today without my parents, but from them supporting me throughout everything, I couldn’t be here today without them.
