Meet Steven Anzardo

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Steven Anzardo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Steven, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

The course of my journey & sense of purpose continually winds throughout life. Art plays an array of roles in channeling my perceptions, honing my expression, & enriches my presence in the moment.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I paint outdoors to savor the  experience of both the environment & my internal, creative state. This method of artmaking is, while perhaps quick to take form, a very still experience. I feel at peace, that everything is right, when I witness the truth of light & nature with love & honesty.

This is a meditation with focus on accurately expressing my optical impression, recognizing the patterns, rules, & relationships of Nature, while maintaining a brevity of step that honors our temperament & taste.

I’ve drawn all my life, & began the practice of painting outdoors in my teenage years. I lived in South Florida until the world paused in 2020. At that moment, I chose to explore the country on my own, as a minimalist car-camping nomad with curiosity & paint gear. After a year of traveling, I chance landed with love in southern Utah.

I’ve now lived in the Southwest over 3 years, exploring canyons, rock climbing, a devout yogi, painting every chance I get.
I exhibit at shows & festivals, & host classes with amazing students. My next workshops are at Yin on Fire Festival, in Cedar City Utah (September 19-22), & at the Bigfork Art Culture Center (October 11-12).

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My love for the moment, patience, & observant nature have & continue to inspire my artwork. For those embarking on the journey of painting the beautiful world around us, all that must be fostered is our sense of awareness, knowledge of nature, self honesty, & curiosity,

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

I gain inspiration with every friend, artist, & lesson along this journey. I get to explore gorgeous canyons & mountains with my supportive & creative friends. The grand community of artists sharing knowledge online, with books of excellent painters of the past, & our love for life gives us the chance to imbue our art with an integrity informed with our total awareness & appreciation.
