Meet Jessica Osber

We recently connected with Jessica Osber and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jessica with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I get my work ethic and business brain from my Dad. Growing up, he taught me that anything good in life is worth working really hard for. I watched as he put so much time and energy into growing his business, which in time became extremely successful. I saw how he could provide for our family and the pride that comes with that. At an early age, I knew that I wanted that for myself. To grow something from the ground up, something I could cultivate and call my own.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I specialize in headshot photography for clients from every walk of life. I work with actors looking to get noticed, businesses looking to showcase their people, and generally anyone who is looking to build their personal brand.

The most exciting part about my job is how I get to hang out with so many different types of creative people. I see every session as a collaboration, and it is an honor to be a part of all of my clients’ personal journeys. Each day I get to create art and let my individual clients inspire me. No day is the same and I always come home with more inspiration and knowledge than I went to work with!

I love being a headshot photographer because there are always opportunities to grow and I am always challenging myself. I enjoy the freedom to experiment with ways to elevate my clients’ experience and to try out new photography styles. My studio is a laboratory where I am always working to become the best artist I can be.

I recently moved into an amazing new studio that is bigger and better than ever. It’s my third New York studio upgrade and I am currently fascinated by the ways we can use the space to create new and amazing shots. We have increased natural light and a lot of space to play. Come check out our brand-new studio in beautiful Crown Heights, Brooklyn!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

First I’d say that the studio energy needs to be right. When headshot clients walk into the studio they can be anxious, excited, and terrified all at once! It’s a lot of pressure to get your headshots taken and the vibes have to be just right so that the client can relax and do their best work! I’ve always been someone who can match my client’s energy and have worked hard to build a process where people can check their day at the door and have a blast. Make your studio a comfortable place to be! Make jokes, get the music right, make everyone comfortable, and remember that your client may be way more nervous than they are letting on!

Second I’d say, you have to be flexible. Not only has my business not followed the path I thought it would, each individual session I shoot veers into unexpected directions. My training as an actor really has helped here. Sometimes a scene, no matter how well rehearsed, just goes off script during a show! This is a good thing. Roll with it and don’t let your sessions become cookie-cutter.

Third, I’d say to be successful in this business you have to be constantly learning and willing to experiment. Photography styles change fast and you have to balance being proficient in your own style while also constantly innovating. I’m always renting new gear, trying different poses, and experimenting with different editing styles. That being said, I have worked for a really long time to develop a style that is my own and I think works well. So clients in my studio can expect a consistent product, while also getting a few new things!

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who can trust the process and knows that I’ve got them. I encourage clients to prepare, but sometimes over-preparing can get in the way of the beautiful, unexpected moments that come with our in-studio collaboration. My best work is with clients who have a clear idea about what story they are looking to tell with their photos and trust me to bring those stories to life.
