Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christina Collins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christina, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my experiences growing up as a high school and collegiate athlete. As an adult and parent of two, I pull from that toolkit every day drawing on the skills and values my coaches instilled in me, including perseverance, risk taking, communication, and leadership. I still draw on that resilience to compete in ultra marathons. I’m always striving to reach the summit of my own potential, and at the same time I want to help others reach theirs. In my company, NeverStopMoving365, we use movement, fitness and sports as a vehicle to develop that same grit and resilience in our youth clients!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I became a physical education teacher because I was so positively impacted by my PE teacher growing up. Upon reflection I realize he taught me so many life lessons through sports and movement because he trained me outside of school. I deeply desired to have the same impact on as many children as possible and NeverStopMoving365 was born.
When I started my journey to become a mom, I realized how early the physical literacy journey starts and that I craved freedom of my own time with a limitless potential to get one million children moving outside of school. Today, I am most excited about my soul’s purpose to make PE available outside of school by partnering with PE Teachers who want to open NeverStopMoving365 in their community and be active zone leaders so that sports and fitness tutoring, bike lessons, swim lessons etc. can be available to all children. I am currently completing my doctoral degree studying the joy of movement in children as well.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) I am committed to my vision and my results. I know my “Why”! I try to remain open minded and flexible on the “How”.
2) Boo’s do not block dunks. Just keep focusing on yourself and don’t worry about those that are not cheering for your success.
3) Grit=refusal to quit. What can you do to stay focused? Stay committed no matter how hard it gets.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents pushed me to work for everything I have, and they allowed me to face failure and disappointment. When I was younger, they pushed me to to do a lot on my own to achieve my goal of playing college sports. Tasks like creating highlight reels, finding and cultivating relationships to mentor me, and all the research involved with selecting a school. That same independence applied to material items like a car. I did not have one until I bought it myself, with the money I earned. For those lessons; it’s ok to fail, you have to work for everything you have, and how to be independent, I am forever grateful to them. They instilled a work ethic in me by leading by example in their own respective careers and lives. Ultimately, the most impactful thing my parents gave me is the drive that I have today.
