We were lucky to catch up with Crystal Ortiz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Crystal , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from the childhood I was brought up in. I was raised with my siblings so we had to learn how to overcome struggles and become adults at a young age.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own Waxery which is a candle making business facility where people come and create their own scented candles. I am located in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. As many people might be skeptical regarding the location I opened up in the area to bring a brighter light to the area. I grew up around the area and still currently live closely in the area as well. Not only that I wanted to give my community the benefit of having a facility to do something fun around them.
I have multiple different packages that are reasonably priced as well as candles and karaoke. I also started doing monthly events to expand the experience. Waxery now has wine tasting and candle making. As well as a backyard that’s set up nicely for the experience of sitting outside while the candles dry. Oh did I mention Waxery is a BYOB facility.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think looking back the three things that was most impactful was the joy I feel when I’m doing my job, surprised because I didn’t know I was capable to get this far in a business all alone, and taking criticism because I know there’s still a lot to learn within my business and learning how to run a business successfully.
My advice would be never to give up. If something fails start back at the beginning and figure out how you could improve.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
My most challenge that I’m facing currently is learning how to put my all in my business without a typical 9-5 job. I guess I was brought up in this mindset of in order for me to be successful in life I need to work a 9-5 etc, but having a 9-5 I tend to put my business on a back burner. So I left my career which I was a federal background investigator to give my business a chance to grow and hopefully flourish very well.
