We recently connected with Ryan Elias Baker and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan Elias, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Fiction. My resilience, plain and simple, comes from fiction. The most amazing stories in existence have the element known as the redemption arc. My personal favorite comes from the film The Dark Knight Rises. I watched that film during the darkest time of my life. There is something about the visual image of Bruce Wayne climbing up that pit and making an impossible jump and harnessing his fear and doubts to do so – it changed me. It wasn’t just TDKR that helped me in my darkest moments. It wasn’t the first, and it wasn’t the last – but, by God, if it wasn’t the strongest. Fiction saved it – and so I will make it for the rest of my life.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I run my own multi-media production company called Phoenix Fire Productions LLC. We specialize in all things story, whether that be music, film, webseries, novels, or even musicals. We are constantly busy cooking up our next project. We are small but passionate, and are focused on constantly bringing high-level indie entertainment for everybody to enjoy. Our first feature film, a horror flick/character drama called Unhinged, is set to come out in 2025, and follows a teenage girl in recovery after witnessing the murder of her friends, an event which follows her into the present and ravages her and those she knows.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities to have as a CEO and leader are discipline, structure, and patience. I don’t believe you can be an effective leader without these three items. Discipline is what makes somebody work even when they don’t want to, which is when it counts; structure is how you consistently and effectively plan around your hectic life by strategically working all facets of your busy life into an easy-to-understand and organized schedule; and patience is how you gain respect and maintain your composure in a rambunctious workspace – and I promise, your workspace will become rambunctious at least once or twice (or 1,000 times) throughout your journey. Don’t worry, I wasn’t good at these three at first. In all honesty, I’m still not a pro. But practice makes perfect.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents are the most gracious people I’ve ever known. They have funded numerous elements of my projects in the past, and continued to support me here and again when money was brutally low. I’m able to stand on my own financially NOW, but still, they would never turn down an opportunity to help me. We would fight in my early days, but in my adulthood, I recognize them now as the heroes of my house and home. Love you, Mom and Dad.
