We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aaron Rice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aaron , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a professional, I firmly believe that success is not defined by external factors such as appearance, but rather by the skills, knowledge, and expertise that one brings to the table. Therefore, I have learned to be effective and successful in any setting, regardless of whether I am the only one in the room that looks like me, by relying on my strengths and abilities and focusing on the task at hand. I stay focused on my goals and objectives, keep an open mind, and seek to understand and learn from those around me. I also strive to maintain a positive attitude and build strong relationships with my colleagues, as I believe that diversity and inclusivity are key to achieving success in any organization or team.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the skills and qualities required are:
1. Perseverance – The willingness to keep going despite challenges and setbacks is crucial in any journey. It is important to develop a growth mindset and view failures as opportunities to learn and improve.
2. Networking – Building relationships and networking with people in your field can provide valuable insights, opportunities, and support. Attend conferences, connect with people on social media, and seek out mentors.
3. Continuous Learning – The world is constantly evolving, and it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in your field. Read books, take online courses, and attend workshops to keep your skills current.
My advice for folks who are early in their journey is to focus on developing these three qualities. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, connect with others in your field, and always be curious and hungry for knowledge. Remember that success is a journey, not a destination, and it requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn and adapt.
