We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Teresa Hunt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Teresa below.
Hi Teresa, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Growing up in a single parent household in public housing (the projects) the odds of getting out were stacked against me. My resilience was developed out of necessity due to the challenges faced such as financial instability, food insecurities and limited resources.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My career as paralegal has been driven by my desire to provide for my family and ensuring stability for my children. Its not necessarily a passion of mine or something I chose purely for personal fulfillment.
I’ve always been a dedicated parent. My inspiration for starting this business came from all of the coffee that accompanied me to my childrens basketball games and tournaments. As I spent countless hours on the sidelines, I found joy in the combination of two things I love: a good cup of coffee and the excitement of the sport. Watching the basketball community come together to watch their children play made me realize how much of a role coffee played during the season – whether it’s helping to energize the early morning games or warming up during late night practices. That’s when I knew I wanted to create something that would bring the same comfort and energy to others in the special moments.
Some of the names of my coffees are ode to the sport 6 Bean Baller, French Fadeaway, Crossover Espresso and African Espresso Shot. Just like basketball each roast embodies it’s own energy and intensity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First I would say my deep appreciation for coffee, it’s origins and preparation methods is essential to great flavor. Equally important is a great customer service experience, as building relationships with customers fosters loyalty and growth. Second , Managing costs, budgeting and understanding profit margins are critical to running a successful coffee business. Lastly, having a creative vision for branding, marketing and product differentiation can help you stand out.
For anyone early in their journeys should know that persistence and resilience is important. Every “No” or setback is an opportunity to learn and not to view it as a failure or endpoint. When facing challenges, focus on the solutions instead of dwelling on the problem. Surround yourself with people that believe in you and offer support and encouragement.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my mother did for me was to tell and show me that there was nothing I couldn’t do! Raising us in public housing on government assistance was not easy and my mother believed that earning a college degree would help “get us out”. She could not afford a babysitter so she took us to class with her. My mother pushed forward no matter what adversity she faced. Watching my mother persevere and become the director of a non-profit organization which helped inner-city youth visit colleges was very inspiring and motivating.
