Meet Ted Chin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ted Chin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ted below.

Ted, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I found my purpose in creating art through imagination because I realized it’s a way to inspire others to tap into their own creativity. Art has the power to push boundaries and spark new ideas, and I want to encourage others to see the world through that lens. For me, it’s also about the constant journey of improvement—becoming a better artist by practicing surrealism and collage art. The more I create, the more I learn, and I want to share that process while introducing more people to these forms and tools like Photoshop.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Artist’s Statement:
The art of photomontage originated in the mid-1850s when avant-garde photographers began to explore innovative ways to produce images that could rival traditional fine art.

As Ted embarked on his own artistic journey, he developed a fascination for the surrealism movement and its emphasis on tapping into the subconscious to give voice to the unspoken.

After experimenting with various mediums, Ted stumbled upon a new passion – using the digital platform “Photoshop” to merge photography with other elements to pioneer a modern-day photomontage movement.

Ted’s Little Dream:
As a child, storytelling always ignited a spark within me.

When I was in graduate school, I struggled with limited resources and time, preventing me from exploring the world as much as I desired. The idea of traveling to new places, discovering unfamiliar cultures, and sharing stories remained a dream for me.

I realized that I could bring my tales to life through the art of photography and Photoshop, leveraging my imagination and skills to create surrealistic visual narratives that could transport viewers to other worlds.

And thus, “Ted’s Little Dream,” a lifelong project, was born. By fusing my passion for storytelling with my love for photography and digital art, I strive to capture the essence of my dreams and share them with the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe the most important factors are qualities, then knowledge, and finally skills. For me, the most crucial aspect of art is the concept. You can always acquire more knowledge and skills, but coming up with great ideas and concepts is the real challenge.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that it’s time for a short break. Taking a step back is essential to recharge and regain clarity. I like to try something new, whether it’s exploring a different activity or simply chatting with friends and fellow artists. Engaging in fresh conversations or perspectives helps shift my mindset, allowing me to see things in a new light. After a bit of rest and a change in scenery, I come back to my work feeling recharged, more focused, and ready to tackle the challenges ahead with renewed energy.
