We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anastasia Zielinski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anastasia, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
When I was younger, negative comments and naysayers only fueled my drive. Every time someone doubted me or suggested I needed to get a “real” job; it only motivated me to prove them wrong. Nowadays, I’ve learned to ignore those voices. I’m confident in myself and my talent, and I know I make a positive impact on the world around me.
That said, I welcome constructive feedback and criticism because they offer opportunities for growth. However, there’s a difference between valuable critique and attempts to dim your light. I’ve encountered many comments about how I should live my life or direct my creativity, which often stems from others’ discomfort with unconventional paths.
A creative career is like a choose-your-own-adventure book with countless routes and objectives. To me, being true to myself and finding fulfillment in my work is most important. As Maya Angelou wisely said, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” From this perspective, I’m proud to say I’m 100% successful.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist, arts educator, and the proud owner of FREAK’N ART, a vibrant community studio nestled in Bend, Oregon. My artistic practice encompasses painting, fiber-based collage, and installation art, all of which explore our relationship to the natural world. My work focuses on the often-overlooked plant life of public spaces, capturing the lush density of these environments in detailed compositions that spark wonder and captivate viewers.
FREAK’N ART was born from a desire for greater control over the teaching process, from scheduling and pricing to supplies. Initially, I was searching for a studio large enough that I could work and run classes out of. Through insight gained from my experience teaching in central Oregon, I understood that people want to expand their creativity but crave flexibility and a space where they could explore on their own terms.
At FREAK’N ART, we strive to cultivate a creative community through innovative art education. Our studio offers traditional art classes as well as DIY drop-in hours, where individuals can work on a variety of projects such as drawing, printmaking, and collage, at their own pace. We provide all necessary materials and guidance, encouraging participants to dive into their creativity without hesitation.
What sets us apart is our commitment to making art accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Our motto, “MAKE ART. FEEL BETTER!” reflects our belief in the transformative power of creativity. We’re dedicated to fostering an environment where artistic exploration is encouraged and celebrated.
We’re excited to continue expanding our offerings and growing our community. Stay up to date on new events, workshops, and creative opportunities at FREAKNART.com.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, positivity, and resilience are the key traits that have aided me along my path in life and my growth as an artist and small business owner.
Persisting through challenges and setbacks has been crucial. In the arts, rejection—whether from residencies, exhibitions, or funding—is a frequent experience. I have come to view these moments as occasions to learn and grow. Instead of letting disappointment deter me, I use it as a chance to refine my approach and seek new opportunities. Cultivate perseverance by creating both long-term and short-term goals, stay committed to your purpose, and practice reframing setbacks as part of the learning process and a chance to realize different, possibly better, opportunities.
Keeping a positive outlook has helped me navigate both successes and difficulties. Celebrating achievements, no matter how small, and finding gratitude even in tough times has kept me motivated. To foster a positive mindset, be aware of how you talk to and about yourself. Words are powerful and impact our confidence and convictions. Furthermore, surround yourself with supportive people, acknowledge your progress, and focus on your successes not your disappointments.
The ability to recover from setbacks and continue moving forward is essential. Life and art both come with their share of challenges, from personal losses to professional obstacles. By cultivating resilience, I have been able to maintain my creative drive and continue pursuing my goals. To help strengthen your resilience, be open and honest about your struggles and take a moment to acknowledge your disappointments. Then pick yourself back up, learn from the experience, and give yourself space to grow and adapt. Also, do not relentlessly push yourself. Listen to your body and know when to take a break, physically and mentally. Stress impacts every part of your life, being healthy and happy is crucial to achieving your goals.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, I am a huge fan of collaboration! I’ve had some incredible experiences and produced amazing work by teaming up with other artists and communities. Currently, I am excited to connect with interior designers and home good designers. My work exudes calm reflection and would be the perfect fit for an interior design project focused on creating a serene, meditative space. Additionally, I know my art would translate beautifully into home goods and see so much potential for a partnership in this field.
If you are interested in exploring a collaboration, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! The best way to reach me is via email at hellofreaknart@gmail.com. Let’s create something beautiful together!
