We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ezra a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
EZRA, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience, perseverance, and grit. My father is who instantly comes to mind. Growing up, he taught my siblings and I that there was nothing that we couldn’t do. If we wanted something, we had to work for it. During adolescence we were talking about making the all-star team or obtaining the most sales for the cookie dough fundraiser. As time passed the message still applied but in real-world circumstances and the importance of character. My dad made a lot of sacrifices for his family and himself to make it. Throughout any of his life struggles, my dad never gave up. His existence is the embodiment of the adjectives listed above. I always strive to be as resilient as him everyday in every decision I make.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Well, from a young age I have always been interested in art: whether its abstraction, black and white sketch, sculptures. It has always been my dream to be able to make a living out of what I do. Moving around a lot during adolescence made art my only constant. With every location I moved to, the art I took interest in evolved as well. I’m 24 now and an independent artist that creates immersive walk through experiences where the spaces are occupied by sculptures, and items that speak to a profound theme that lays on my heart space.
Being in LA, very artist has a day job between the cool exhibits and art panels. While working full time as a chef and obtaining my undergrad degree, my aspirations and goals tend to be put on hold from time to time. I make as much time for it as I can. It is my therapy and the essence of everything I am. I do commissions for interior decoration design, have an art residency in Joshua tree coming up, and another art installation hopefully in the spring of 2025. I’m more than excited to be sharing my work with the world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My openness to lovingly connect with other people despite the pain I’ve endured is a gift in itself. People have a choice when pain has been inflicted to put their emotional walls up and never have them come down or to embrace the unknown and live life with love everyday. Its a choice and I’m glad I learned this lesson early in my life. It has led me to so many beautiful souls that I will forever cherish. Through that love I’ve also had amazing experiences with talented individuals. I’m forever grateful for what they taught me.
The ability to remain receptive to my environment, critique, and advice has taken me very far in my career.
Being in the industry, thick skin is much needed.
With years of networking and rejection it has helped me work through the adversities of the creative world.
To be open to new experiences and people, you need to be open with yourself. I would suggest connecting back with yourself to find your true north and it does reflect onto others. To remain receptive is to another way to remain open to different perspectives and ideas. Everyone has something to teach you. Take what serves you and let go of what doesn’t.
To gain thicker skin, just remember the term take it or leave it. That is how you appear in the world. Never change yourself for anyone or anything. Have them take you as you are or not at all. You’re a treasure that is meant to be found. What is meant for you is already yours.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to collaborate with a diverse array of artists! It doesn’t matter what medium, we could figure something out! Because I’m constantly looking for ways to shake up my concepts for the next immersive experience, collaborating with others keeps things funky. Any medium you got and I’m your human. You can connect with me through instagram (xcid_cloudsss) and/or my work email (Ezra.art.1111@gmail.com). I’m constantly checking them so I will see it come up! If you’re looking to collaborate and think your work is too “out there” or nicheless, DM me right now! We’ll make some pretty magick.
